Truckee sweeps

DHS to reach state

DAYTON - Truckee scored eight times in the sixth to wipe out a 5-4 deficit and beat Dayton 13-5 to sweep the 3A baseball series and advance to next week's state tournament.

Dayton concludes the season at 22-5. It was a bitter end for a team that graduates nine seniors.

"That was rough," said coach Jay Merrell. "Nothing went our way. We hit a lot of hard balls again, but right at them. Truckee executed at a real high level at whatever it tried to do."

James Depew highlighted the eight-run inning with a three-run double. Truckee also hit a couple of run-scoring bloopers over a drawn-in Dayton infield.

Dayton cut Truckee's lead to 3-1 with an RBI double by Tim Ply. Truckee added a run in the fifth to make it 4-1, but Dayton bounced back with four in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-4 lead.

Logan Jones had a two-run single, while Houston Berntson and Kyle Farnworth added run-scoring hits.

That set the stage for Truckee's sixth-inning explosion. Berntson took the pitching loss, yielding six hits and five earned runs in five innings. He struck out seven batters.

Aces rally late

to beat Iowa

RENO - The Reno Aces sent 10 men to the plate and pushed across four runs in the seventh inning Saturday night, turning a late deficit into a 6-5 come-from-behind victory over the Iowa Cubs in the series opener at Aces Ballpark.

Reno trailed 5-2 in the seventh, but in the home half of the frame, two hits and five walks resulted in four runs and a 6-5 lead. In the inning, Wily Mo Pena hit a two-run single, Cody Ransom had a run-scoring infield hit, and Andy Tracy drew a bases-loaded walk.

Staked to a one-run lead, Rafael Rodriguez worked a scoreless eighth, and Kam Mickolio slammed the door in the ninth for his third save.

Saturday marked Reno's 12th come-from-behind victory of the season, and the Aces improved to 9-1 on the season in series openers. The club is now a season-high 11 games over .500.

Kyler Newby (2-1) earned the win after working two scoreless frames out of the Aces bullpen.
