PREPS: Gingell ties for 10th in state golf

RENO - Carson High's Garrett Gingell shot a 5-over-par 77 in blustery conditions Tuesday at the NIAA 4A State Golf Championship at Hidden Valley Country Club.

Gingell finished with a 36-hole total of 156, putting him in a tie for 10th place with Palo Verde's Errek McClellan and Coronado's Tad Darland. Only five golfers recorded a better round than Gingell.

Gingell shot a 1-over-par 37 on the front and a 4-over-par 40 on the back. He birdied both par-5s on the front, Nos. 1 and 7. He also birdied No. 11.

"That was a very good score in the conditions," Carson coach Terry Gingell said. "It was a huge, blustery wind. It almost rendered the course unplayable. Garrett was able to hold it together, though."

The wind really came into play on No. 14, a par-4. Gingell hit a good shot to reach the green, but ended up three-putting for a bogey after the wind blew his ball about 20 feet further from the pin.

"He hit a nice second shot under the wind," the elder Gingell said.

Coronado placed first with a 781, while Palo Verde was second with an 806 and Reno was third at 813.

Foothill's Taylor Montgomery was the medalist with a 145, while Arbor View's Zane Thomas and Coronado's A.J. McInerney tied for second at 148. Bishop Manogue's Kevin Andrews was fourth at 149 and Palo Verde's Brandon Bauden was fifth at 152.
