MOODY: Giants need third baseman, back-up catcher

Being a huge San Francisco Giants fan, I'm ecstatic with how they are currently playing despite key injuries to Pablo Sandoval and Mark DeRosa.

Sandoval was the Giants' best hitter when he went down with his hand injury. DeRosa added infield depth. DeRosa, unfortunately, has been a major disappointment for San Francisco because he's proven to be injury prone.

It's nice to see Aubrey Huff and Cody Ross, two of the Giants' heroes from last year, starting to heat up. Huff is a notorious slow starter, while Ross has recovered from his injury suffered in spring training.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Giants get somebody via trade who could play third base and maybe another position. Some versatility wouldn't hurt this team. I'd like to see them get a good back-up catcher, too.

I also was glad to hear GM Brian Sabean say that Barry Zito wouldn't automatically get back his starting job in the rotation. Ryan Vogelsong is throwing well right now, and I hope that manger Bruce Bochy goes with the hot hand.

Also, if you are going to get Buster Posey out from behind the plate to rest his legs, put him at first base. Huff can play a decent left field.

The Nevada Bullets, the Northern Nevada scout team, are now playing in the Far West League. The wood-bat team is in its second year.

The second-year team, coached by Jim Blueberg, Jerahmie Libke and Tom Keating, is made up of primarily former Northern Nevada high school players and current Western Nevada College players.

The team opens its season next Sunday with a home doubleheader against RBI Baseball at Western Nevada College. The team will play nearly 50 games this season, including 30 league games.

The roster includes current WNC players Andrew Woeck, Chris Woolley and Beau Day. Also on the roster is Colby Blueberg, who just finished his senior season at Carson, current CHS star Nick Domitrovich and former Carson stars Kyle Stone and David Charles.

Conner Oliver, who led Dayton to the Lahontan League regular-season title, also is a member of the team. Oliver is headed to college in North Dakota in the fall.

The high school season officially ended Saturday, and I'd like to thank all the coaches and student-athletes for their cooperation.

Also, kudos to Yerington's softball and baseball team which brought home state titles.

Congrats to Dayton's Kathie Arias, who finished her high school career with three straight 3A discus and shot put titles.

I still think that Nevada's state track meet should encompass all four divisions competing against each other. That qualifying meet could have been held last week which would have forced the 4A to have their regional trials and finals in the same week.
