Hair salon grand opening Thursday

A grand opening for hair salon, Haylie's Hair Hut, will be 5:30 p.m. Thursday. The salon, 503 E. Spear St., will be offering $5 off for the next 30 days.

Capital City Dems meeting June 1

The Capital City Democrats will meet in the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Building, 709 E. Robinson St. at 7 p.m. June 1.

Plans for upcoming events will be discussed including support for a candidates' barbecue, which will be sponsored by the Carson City Democratic Women's Club in July.

Pizza, drinks and dessert will be available before the meeting, starting at 6:30 p.m. Donations welcome, but not required. For more information, call the Democratic headquarters at 841-3367.

WECO barbecue set up for Memorial Day weekend

Members of Warren Engine Co. No 1, volunteer fire department, will be stoking up the barbecue grills during the Memorial Day weekend at the Nevada State Railroad Museum where a number of events are planned.

WECO will offer hamburgers, cheeseburgers and hot dogs for $5 each including chips and drinks. Proceeds go toward maintenance of the fire museum at Fire Station 1 on Stewart Street.

Included in the events at the Railroad Museum over the three-day holiday weekend beginning Saturday are rides on a 1905 steam engine, viewing new exhibits at the train museum and inspecting railroad artifacts in the annex building.

There will be live music, and military, law enforcement and search and rescue vehicles will be on display. Other attractions are planned. The emphasis of the three-day event will be honoring military service.

According to Peter Barton, acting administrator of the state Division of Museums and History, a single ticket will be offered that provides unlimited, all-access to the museum and train. The cost is $10 for adults, $3 for children 4-11, and those 3 and under will be admitted free of charge.

Visitors will pay when entering before they leave their vehicles, get a wristband, "and they're good to go," Barton said.

The museum is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the steam engine will run from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. with departures every half-hour, he said.

The Railroad Museum is located on U.S. Highway 395 (2180 S. Carson St.) and Fairview Drive.

Final phase of technology installation temporarily closes library

The Carson City Library at 900 N. Roop St. will be closed Memorial Day through June 3 and reopen at 10 a.m. June 4 to complete the final phase of the library's RFID project.

"Due to remodeling construction, the book drops behind the library will temporarily be unavailable. Return options include keeping items until the library reopens; late fees will not be assessed. Or, if preferred, book drops at the front of the library and on Plaza Street behind City Hall are available," says circulation manager Elaine Werlinger.

Electronic tags installed in the entire collection, an automatic sorting machine, remodeling and rearranging make up the project. The project, begun about a year ago, has resulted in the library being open six additional hours each week, with no additional staffing.

"This final phase is really exiting because we're getting the automated sorter. We call it 'big red,'" said Library Deputy Director Tammy Westergard. "We look forward to the community being able to see this piece of equipment. It's amazing. But, better still, using this technology allows us to heighten direct service to patrons and reduce time spent servicing materials. This would not have been possible without the steadfast support of the Library Board of Trustees, Friends of the Library, the Library Foundation and City Hall."

In the meantime the library's business branch is open at 108 E. Proctor St., Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Business Resource Innovation Center, or BRIC, is a centralized location for business services. Go to www.carson.org/bric or call 775-283-7123.

Former Carson City mayor's book sold locally

A memoir by former two-term Carson City Mayor Harold Jacobsen is available at the Legislative Building gift shop and at the Villa Basque Deli.

Titled "There Ain't No Fences," the book chronicles Jacobsen's many years in ranching in Nevada.

He served three terms as a University of Nevada regent, representing Nevada's 15 cow counties, and in the Nevada Assembly from Humboldt County from 1947-48 before moving to Carson City.

Jacobsen served as Nevada's member of the White House Conference on Youth in 1970.

In 1980, the University of Nevada Board of Regents recognized Jacobsen as a "Distinguished Nevadan."

The book is priced at $27.95.

Hartung to speak at Douglas GOP women's meeting

Nevada Federation of Republican Women President Lynn Hartung will be the guest speaker at the Douglas County Republican Women's June 1 meeting at the Carson Valley Inn in Minden.

Doors open at 11 a.m. The meeting and buffet lunch (Cost $20 per person) begins at 11:45 a.m.

Author Borg to speak at Footprinters meeting

Lake Tahoe mystery writer Todd Borg will be guest speaker at the monthly dinner meeting of the Carson Valley Footprinters on June 16 at the Carson Valley Inn. A no-host bar starts at 6 p.m. and the meeting begins at 7 p.m. Borg will talk about the motivation for his novels. Dinner fee will be $20. Call Ray for reservations at 267-4355.

Commodity food distribution Friday

RSVP Carson City volunteers will be distributing free USDA Commodity Foods on 9-11 a.m. Friday at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St. No one will be admitted before 9 a.m.

However, a new system will be in place with tables set up alphabetically to get people in and out more quickly. This month's commodity foods include baby lima beans, canned sliced potatoes, frozen chicken thighs and drums, cherry apple juice, grapefruit juice, rotini pasta, canned apricots, canned cream corn, canned peaches and canned green beans.

Any needy family in Carson City may be eligible by certifying that their household's annual income does not exceed federal poverty guidelines which are $20,036 for a single and $26,955 for a couple. A picture identification or drivers license must be provided. Food may be picked-up for the homebound or those unable to attend by bringing a signed note from them and their picture ID.

RSVP and the State Commodity Food Program order all food that is available; however, if the food runs out it is because we could not obtain more. Persons declaring overly large families for commodities will be asked for proof of family members.

VE Exams in Stagecoach

Regularly scheduled testing sessions for amateur radio licenses are now available in Stagecoach.

The next session will be on June 11. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and last until about 9 a.m. The testing will end around noon. Pre-registration is encouraged, but walk-ins are also welcome. The exam fee is $15 (please make checks payable to ARRL-VEC).

Testing is always on the second Saturday of June, September, and December of each year. The 2011 schedule is June 11, Sept. 10, and Dec. 10.

Testing will take place at the Stagecoach Community Center, 8200 Highway 50 E. (next to the old Fire Station) on the west side of Stagecoach Hill. Coming from the west, turn right at the fire station just before climbing the hill to Silver Springs. From the east, turn left just as you get to the Fire Station coming down Stagecoach Hill. Signs will be posted.

If you are upgrading an existing license, bring your original license and a photocopy of that license, as well as the originals of any CSCEs you may have. Please remember to bring photocopies, as there are no copying facilities on site.
