Barbecue to honor veterans

Evergreen Gene's will host its annual Memorial Day BBQ, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday, to honor veterans and thank the community for its support over the past year.

Everyone is invited to enjoy hot dogs and hamburgers and all the trimmings.

All veterans will receive a 25 percent discount on purchases at the store that day as well as free food.

'Backwall Show' features local artists

Local artists, Mechele Johnson and Dorrine Sadilek will be featured in the "Backwall Show," at the Brewery Arts Center Gallery, May 30 to June 18.

A reception will be 4-6 p.m. June 4. Mechele is well-known for her paintings of old mining town scenes and floral pieces. Dorrine does very detailed collages and paintings of scenes around Carson City.

Choir forming for Fourth of July concert

A community choir will join the Carson Valley Pops Orchestra for the 2 p.m. Fourth of July concert of patriotic music at Heritage Park in Gardnerville.

Lovers of choral music are encouraged to participate.

Dr. Stephen H. Farnsley, board member of the Carson Valley Pops Orchestra, will be the rehearsal director for the community choir. Farnsley is music director at Carson Valley United Methodist Church, and adjunct music faculty member at Western Nevada College. He and his wife Doreen recently founded the Carson Valley Music Academy, which offers academically-based music instruction to individuals and groups of all ages.

A variety of age groups are invited to participate in the community choir. Rehearsals are planned 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, June 14, 21, and 28 at Carson Valley United Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville. Additional details on rehearsals with the orchestra are being planned.

Divorce support group, seminar being organized

DivorceCare, a help seminar and support group for people experiencing divorce and/or separation, or even considering divorce, will be on Tuesday evenings beginning June 14 and continuing for 13 weeks.

DivorceCare features nationally recognized experts on divorce and recovery topics. Seminar sessions include "Facing My Anger," "Facing my Loneliness," "Depression," "New Relationships," "Kid Care," and "Forgiveness."

"We understand how deeply people and families are hurt by divorce," said Robin Burton, organizer of the group. The support group, "is a place where many people have found that they can begin putting their lives back together again."

DivorceCare will meet in the home of Danny and Robin Burton in Gardnerville.

Dayton meeting to look at mining

Dayton Regional Advisory Council will meet at 7 p.m. June 1 at the Lyon County Office Complex, 34 Lakes Blvd., Dayton.

Jeff Collins of the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection will make a presentation about the new phase of the mercury contamination investigation associated with historic Comstock Lode gold and silver mining in the Carson River watershed.

Gayle Sherman will present an overview of the Comstock Residential Association, including who they are and the reason they came into being.

Julie Drakster, Manager of Communications for Comstock Mining will make a presentation on the company's mining plans for Silver City & Dayton, followed by an open question and answer period.

Teen candidates sought for Marine program

The Devil Pups are looking for a few really good teenagers, ages 14-17, to attend their annual summer encampment July 20-30 at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Fight cancer with line dancing

A country line dance program to benefit American Cancer Society will take place 6-10 p.m. Saturday at the Dayton Community Center, Pike Street, Dayton.

Country line dancing lessons taught by Bob Truesdale are 6-7 p.m. followed by dancing to live music by Don & Nadine from 7-10 p.m.

Volunteers needed for 28th annual Rendezvous

The 28th Annual Carson City Rendezvous - a living history and re-enactment event celebrating Nevada's early days of the mid- to late 1800s is coming back to Mills Park for three days of fun, excitement, color, and pageantry June 10-12.

Volunteers are greatly needed for the event in all capacities, including staffing the information booth, assisting with the Kids Stick Rodeo, and some more laborious jobs such as set up and tear down June 9 and then June 13.

Volunteers will receive an event shirt, food and beverages when they work, and a sense of community pride. The Carson City Rendezvous is a 501 c (3) non-profit organization privately managed by NV Shows, LLC.

There will be many ongoing fun and family-friendly activities throughout the event including;

• Live Western musical entertainment, rope tricks, and cowboy poetry

• Gunfight skits from the Nevada Gunfighters

• Traditional Native American Village with crafts, food, dancing and storytelling

• Civil War battle re-enactments and military campsites

• Mountain Men camps where you can throw a tomahawk, shoot a cannon and see frontier living displays

• Dutch oven cooking demonstrations

• Ride on a real stagecoach from the TNT Stagelines

• Get a letter delivered to you by the Pony Express

• Railroad Museum display with a real hand car on 100 feet of track

• Meet living legends like Abe Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Kit Carson

Celebrate 10th anniversary of statue dedication

The 10th anniversary celebration of the Snowshoe Thompson dedication of the statue in Mormon Staion State Park in Genoa will be June 19.

A program begins at 2 p.m. with refreshments at the pavilion at 2:45 p.m. At 3:15 p.m., the Nordahl Grieg Norwegian Dancers will be featured on the lawn, and at 4 p.m., free admission to the new Snowshoe exhibit will be in the Genoa Courthouse Museum.

Other participants include sculptor Don Budy, the Sons of Norway Hvitefjell Lodge from Reno, the Daughters of Norway, Queen Maud Lodge from Carson City, Norwegian Fjord horses and Norwegian dignitaries.

This is a free event sponsored by the Friends of Snowshoe Thompson.

Douglas GOP Central Committee to meet

Douglas County Republican Central Committee's June 9 meeting will be held at our new headquarters location, 1615 Highway 395, Suite B, Minden. Parking is available either in spaces marked "B" or in the overflow parking lot just south of Buckeye Road.

The social starts at 7 p.m. and the meeting convenes at 7:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Kirk Lippold, candidate for U.S. Congressman, 2nd Congressional District.

Lippold is a retired Navy commander, and is seeking his first political office.

"Not being a career politician, I can look at things with new leadership and new vision and bring to the office a sense of integrity," Lippold said.

The executive board will meet prior to the membership meeting.

An old-fashioned GOP barbecue with food, drinks, music, games, candidates and fun for the whole family will be held at The Corley Ranch in Gardnerville 4-8 p.m. July 16.
