130 YEARS AGO

General Garfield has drank considerable liquor in his time. Why? "You know we had a pretty hot canvass in Arkansas this summer, and I went all over the state stumping. Well, I saw the graves of a good many fellows who are now in the dark, or the light valley, which ever it may be. I saw the wreck of many who started with me. The graves set me thinking. I had already drank a barrel and a half more than I was entitled to. I was now drinking the other man's whiskey, so I stopped. There you have the whole story."

100 YEARS AGO

Citizens of surrounding towns realize there will be something doing here the first week in July. Already Virginia and Reno are sending to the Committee for vacant buildings and lots to rent for the carnival. One was snapped up yesterday by an enterprising Reno man who couldn't stop to write. The midway will be a great source of revenue.

70 YEARS AGO

California motorists are coming by the thousands, filling hotels and auto courts. So great was the demand, a Reno radio station broadcast a call to residents to open rooms to transients so they don't have to sleep in parks or cars.

50 YEARS AGO

Carson Water Co. is asking residents to rotate watering of lawns until July 15, the target date for completion of the state's line from Marlette Lake. "The serious water situation compels us to ask for your cooperation," stated Robert Shriver, manager and president of Carson Water Co.

20 YEARS AGO

Cowards are part of history. Nevada, the "Battle Born State," once had a town named after one, James Hewitt Ledlie. Ledlie was the commander of the charge of 12,000 men into an exploded pit at Petersburg July 30, 1864. The settlement is seven miles north of Austin.

10 YEARS AGO

Nevada's boost to keep nuclear waste from Yucca Mountain came from incoming Senate majority leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D. "As long as we're in the majority, it's dead."
