Tonopah's DanRa Skanovsky was crowned Miss Nevada 1961 during the half-time of the Senator-Bobcat game which resulted in a 12-6 victory for the mighty Carson Senators.

Cape Canaveral, Florida: Astronauts Joe Engle and Richard Truly inspected the space shuttle Columbia, "Everything is looking beautiful" for the unprecedented attempt to return the ship to orbit.

The nation's unemployment rate shot up to 5.4 percent and surged to the highest level as the after effects of the terrorist attacks hit.
