Healing Crusade starts today

The Messenger of the Light Ministry presents "Take a Step of Faith Healing Crusade" with evangelist Mario Bonilas today through Sunday.

Space needed for Toys for Tots drive

The space that the Ron Wood Family Resource Center used last year for the Toys for Tots distribution is not available this year leaving organizers in a difficult situation for their annual toy drive.

Anyone who has a vacant space no less than 4,000 square feet in size which they would be willing to donate from Nov. 15-Dec. 15 can call executive director Joyce Buckingham at 775-884-2269.

"I have the liability insurance and utilities covered, but if I have to pay for space, that comes out of the little money we have for additional toys that we always need to buy," Buckingham said.

Food commodity distribution set for Nov. 18

RSVP Carson City volunteers will distribute free USDA Commodity Foods from 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 18 at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St.

No one will be admitted before 9 a.m. so distributors ask that no one arrive early since they will be asked to remain outside. Security will be present to enforce the policy. Those who attend should be prepared for a long wait.

Any needy family in Carson City may be eligible by signing the "Issuance Sheet" at the community center certifying that their household's annual income does not exceed federal poverty guidelines, which are monthly gross income of $1,361 for a single and $1,838 for a couple.

"We operate on the honor system and ask that you respect this privilege," said RSVP Director Janice Ayres.

Proof of Carson City residency is required. A picture ID or driver's license must be provided. Food may be picked up for the homebound or those unable to attend by bringing a signed note from them and their picture ID.

This month's commodity foods include canned tomato sauce, great northern beans, cran-apple juice, canned vegetable soup, whole grain rotini mac, canned mixed fruits, frozen ground beef and apricots, peaches and or pears.

Registration open for Poetry Out Loud

High school teachers and students are invited to get involved in Nevada Poetry Out Loud, a dynamic poetry program that is structured similarly to the National Spelling Bee, but focuses on literary heritage through memorization and performance of classic and contemporary poetry.

Registration for Nevada Poetry Out Loud competition is open to all Nevada schools and home school associations through Dec. 1.

Poetry Out Loud begins at the local level as students learn about, memorize and finally recite poetry. Participants advance from school to district competitions, and then to the Nevada State Finals, where the stakes are high. The Poetry Out Loud State Champion earns $1,000, wins $1,000 for his or her school to support literary programs, and travels to Washington, D.C., to compete for $50,000 in scholarships and school prizes in the National Poetry Out Loud Finals. Those who place second and third at the Nevada State Finals receive $500 each and $500 for their schools.

The student winner and a chaperone from each participating school district receive support to attend the state finals on March 24 in Reno. Local gallery seeking young artists

Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery in Carson City is searching for young artists in the community. To qualify, artists must be in school in Northern Nevada (K-12) and have a desire to create artwork and want to show it.

The gallery will accept artwork from Jan. 9 and 10 at 220-A W. Telegraph St. All artwork must be original, framed and ready to hang on the wall. No artwork can be larger than 20 by 24 inches, and all artwork must be signed.

Artwork will be on display Jan. 12, 13 and 14. All artwork will be considered, but space is limited, so not all will be selected. For information, call 775-885-2787.

Bingo night announced

Soroptimist International of the Comstock will host a bingo night Saturday at Dayton Valley Golf Club. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and bingo starts at 7 p.m. Cost is $15, which includes snacks, coffee, water and lemonade. There also will be a no-host bar.

GOP women to meet

Carson City Republican Women will hold their monthly meeting at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Gold Dust West Casino, 2171 E. William St. Guest speakers will be Jay Baldwin, chairman of the Carson City Republican Central Committee, and Carol Howell, second vice chair of CCRCC. Democratic Women to meet

The Carson City Democratic Women's Club will meet at 11:30 a.m. Saturday for lunch at Grandma Hattie's. The meeting will start at noon. Planned Parenthood opens in Carson City

Planned Parenthood Mar Monte opened its newest health center in Carson City at 1201 Stewart St., Suite 120. The center offers reproductive health care to low-income, uninsured or under-insured people, including cancer screenings, women's annual exams, contraceptive care, pregnancy testing and options, counseling, diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, HIV testing and sexual health education.

Homeowners can learn landscape design from professional

A Landscape Design Workshop for the Homeowner will be taught from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 4-5 at Greenhouse Garden Center, 2450 S. Curry St.

Cost is $100 per person or couple. Lunch and classroom materials are included.

Class size is limited to 16, so reservations are required.

The class will be taught by David Ruf, owner of Greenhouse.

During the 10-hour workshop, participants will learn about all aspects of how to redo an existing landscape or how to design and implement a new landscape.

Talent Show sponsored by WNC Latino club

Western Nevada College's Latino Student Club presents a Show Your Talent Contest from 5-8 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Carson Nugget.

The night of talent for the whole family is a fundraiser for WNC student scholarships.

Tickets for adults are $8; students with school ID are $5; children 5-12 years old are $4; and children under 5 are admitted free.

Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place. Snacks and raffle tickets will be sold.

Artist reception features Gabriel Aguayo

Delicious, by Gabriel Aguayo, will be from 4-7 p.m. Nov. 17 at Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery, 220-A W. Telegraph St. in Carson City.

Aguayo is a local artist who grew up in Carson City. He and his family still live in the area.

"His artwork is both whimsical and energetic. With his ability to mix mediums and techniques, he is able to take a common situation and create a truly one-of-a-kind piece of artwork," said shop co-owner Jeff Pace. "Mr. Aguayo's use of color has been called passionate and soulful."

This will be Aguayo's first show in Carson City and the public is welcome to attend. There will be a wine tasting, espresso bar, light appetizers, and beautiful artwork.

Buy a pie, feed a family

The public is invited to join with the Women of Our Time, Capital Christian Center in supporting the Ron Wood Community Essentials Food Bank and the Our Time Outreach Center.

"Pie to the Rescue is an event where some of Carson City's best chefs donate their time and talent to baking the freshest and finest Thanksgiving pies," said Stacey Dutra, who is helping to organize the event.

People can choose between pumpkin or apple pie for $25 per pie, and then pick up the pie between 2-7 p.m. at a drive-through at the Capital Christian Center, 1600 Snyder Ave., on Nov. 22, just in time for Thanksgiving.

Order deadline is Nov. 18, and orders can be placed by calling the pie hotline at 775-883-3355, Ext. 250 or by emailing pietotherescue@thinkccc.com.

One pie during the event will contain a Golden Harvest ticket which will entitle the owner to win a diamond and silver angel wing necklace donated by Tolman Jewelers.

Some of the bakers participating will be from Z Bistro, Sassafras, Garibaldi's, Comma Coffee, High Sierra Brewing Co., and Villa Basque Deli.
