Local gallery seeking young artists

Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery in Carson City is searching for young artists in the community. To qualify, artists must be in school in Northern Nevada (K-12) and have a desire to create artwork and want to show it.

The gallery will accept artwork from Jan. 9 and 10 at 220-A W. Telegraph St. All artwork must be original, framed and ready to hang on the wall. No artwork can be larger than 20 by 24 inches, and all artwork must be signed.

Artwork will be on display Jan. 12, 13 and 14. All artwork will be considered, but space is limited, so not all will be selected. For information, call 775-885-2787.

Hockey League registration open

The Sierra Inline Hockey League will hold registrations for youth and adult leagues for the 2011-12 season daily through Jan. 31 at the Pony Express Pavilion at Mills Park.

Planned Parenthood opens in Carson City

Planned Parenthood Mar Monte opened its newest health center in Carson City at 1201 Stewart St., Suite 120. The center offers reproductive health care to low-income, uninsured or under-insured people, including cancer screenings, women's annual exams, contraceptive care, pregnancy testing and options, counseling, diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, HIV testing and sexual health education.

NARFE meets Tuesday

The National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 1329 will welcome November speaker, Bonnie MacQuarrie, from Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

The meeting is at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grandma Hattie's on South Carson Street.

All retired federal workers are welcome to learn more about changes in insurance.

Homeowners can learn landscape design from professional

A Landscape Design Workshop for the Homeowner will be taught from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 4-5 at Greenhouse Garden Center, 2450 S. Curry St.

Cost is $100 per person or couple. Lunch and classroom materials are included.

Class size is limited to 16, so reservations are required.

The class will be taught by David Ruf, owner of Greenhouse Garden Center.

During the 10-hour workshop, participants will learn about all aspects of how to redo an existing landscape or how to design and implement a new landscape.

Artist reception features Gabriel Aguayo

Delicious, by Gabriel Aguayo, will be from 4-7 p.m. Nov. 17 at Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery, 220-A W. Telegraph St. in Carson City.

Aguayo is a local artist who grew up in Carson City. He and his family still live in the area.

"His artwork is both whimsical and energetic. With his ability to mix mediums and techniques, he is able to take a common situation and create a truly one-of-a-kind piece of artwork," said shop co-owner Jeff Pace. "Mr. Aguayo's use of color has been called passionate and soulful."

This will be Aguayo's first show in Carson City and the public is welcome to attend. There will be a wine tasting, espresso bar, light appetizers, and beautiful artwork.

Buy a pie, feed a family

The public is invited to join with the Women of Our Time, Capital Christian Center in supporting the Ron Wood Community Essentials Food Bank and the Our Time Outreach Center.

"Pie to the Rescue is an event where some of Carson City's best chefs donate their time and talent to baking the freshest and finest Thanksgiving pies," said Stacey Dutra, who is helping to organize the event.

People can choose between pumpkin or apple pie for $25 per pie, and then pick up the pie between 2-7 p.m. at a drive-through at the Capital Christian Center, 1600 Snyder Ave., on Nov. 22, just in time for Thanksgiving.

One pie during the event will contain a Golden Harvest ticket which will entitle the owner to win a diamond and silver angel wing necklace donated by Tolman Jewelers.

"Just About Nature" is new photography exhibition

Photos depicting the natural beauty of the Carson Valley area will be featured at The Nature Conservancy's Whit Hall Interpretive Center, 381 Genoa Lane, on Nov. 19 and 20.

"Just About Nature" is the theme for the exhibition which is being co-sponsored by the Carson Valley Photography Club and The Nature Conservancy.

Saturday exhibition hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday, the exhibition will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Exhibition attendees will become photo judges and will be asked to vote for "People's Choice" awards.

Carson Valley Photography Club past-president Doug Dill will offer an hour-long slide presentation on photographing wildlife at 1 p.m. both days.

Dill spent two months at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Malheur Wildlife Refuge in southeastern Oregon this summer as a volunteer photographer. His background includes more than 15 years as a professional photojournalist and another 16 years teaching photojournalism and related subjects at the college level including Fresno State University, Marshall University, and as an adjunct at Western Nevada College in Minden. He holds a masters degree in journalism.

Pajama program celebrates 10th year

"Danger Season" for the children continues through March 31 to ensure that as the temperatures drop, as many children as possible will be warm at bedtime.

This is the most important time for the Pajama Program whose purpose is giving new pajamas and new books to children in need all year long. Local volunteers across America are called to action.

"I have more than 100 more children to provide for this year than the last two previous winters. It is a very crucial time, and we need your help," said Christy Bertholf, chapter president for the Northern Nevada Pajama Program.

"The pajamas and books go to shelters from Gardnerville to Reno and as far as Elko. Brand new pajamas are needed to keep these children warm on these cold Nevada nights," she said.

Artist hosts open studio preview sale

Gardnerville Artist Teri Sweeney will once again hold an Open Studio Preview and Sale of her latest work at her Gardnerville Studio.

Sweeney, a nationally known Western Artist, has been preparing artwork for the upcoming 2012 Spring Show Season for such highly regarded shows as Cowgirl Up! in Wickenburg Ari.; the Western Masters Art Show and Sale in Great Falls, Mont.; and the San Dimas Invitational Western Art Show and Sale in San Dimas, Calif. The preview offers local art collectors first peek at her latest work in watercolors and oils and the opportunity to purchase pieces not yet shown to the public.

Along with painting for shows, Sweeney also teaches watercolor classes in Gardnerville and Lake Tahoe and holds several workshops a year at various locations throughout the West.
