PREP ROUNDUP: Carson girls blank Galena 1-0

RENO - Josilyn Daggs scored 12 minutes into the match, and Carson High's girls soccer team held on for a 1-0 victory over Galena in a Sierra League match Saturday afternoon.

Carson, 6-2, returns to action Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at home against Damonte Ranch.

Carson out-shot Galena 16-5.

"Galena played us very hard; put a lot of pressure on us," said coach Randy Roser. "They were trying to force us into bad passes. They did what Manogue did which was to play three forwards up top.

"It was all Josilyn in the first 15 minutes. Kenzie (Tillitt) did a good job in the midfield. Aaran Rumbaugh and Kaitlyn Holmes played outside midfield and they did a good job of slowing things down. Our back four defenders held it together."

Carson, Galena boys tie

RENO - The Senators fought back from a 2-0 halftime deficit with second-half goals by Evan Sanchez and Cristian Hernandez to tie the Grizzlies 2-2.

Carson out-shot Galena 9-7 and had a 5-4 edge in shots on goals.

It was a physical contest with 40 fouls called. Seven yellow cards were issued.

"It was a physical game," said coach Eric Masters, whose team is 6-1-2 heading into Wednesday's home match against Damonte Ranch at 7 p.m. "They're a good team.

They had two goals in the first half going with the win and we scored our two goals in the second half going with the wind. We were second-guessing ourselves a lot because of the win."

Carson JV boys lose

RENO - Galena upset Carson 4-3 in JV soccer action Saturday afternoon.

Carson got goals from Dan Zuber, Francisco Cabrera and Robert Aboundis, while Milton Rodriguez contributed an assist.

Breithaupt wins again

FERNLEY - Katrina Breithaupt won the girls' race for the second consecutive week, and she managed to take five seconds off her time on a much-tougher 5K course on Friday afternoon.

Breithaupt and Virginia City's Tobi Steele battled throughout the race. Breithaupt led until she hit the steep part of the course two different times and was overtaken by Steele. Breithaupt overtook Steele on the downhill and flat part of the course to win the race in 22:17. Steele was timed in 23:25. Dayton's Kaia Galloway was 12th in 28:38.

On the boys' side, Dayton's Joe Law finally had to play second fiddle to Aaron Elissa.

Elissa was fifth out of 90 runners, running a 19:40, while Law was ninth in 20:06. Law was followed by Skyler Rose, who finished in 13th place at 20:30 and then Jamie Woods, who was 19th in 21:03. Dayton's fifth finisher was Nick Langstaff, who was 40th in 22:54.

Dayton's boys were third as a team.

VOLLEYBALL

Carson takes fifth place

CARMICHAEL, Calif. - Carson High's volleyball team posted a 2-3 record at Saturday's Carmichael Invitational.

Carson went 1-2 in pool play, beating Big Valley 25-14 and 25-21, and losing to Lodi 22-25, 25-21 and 11-15 and Rio Americano 24-26 and 23-25.

The Senators knocked off pool-play leader Chico 25-22 and 25-12 before losing to eventual finalist Colfax 17-25 and 8-25.

Micaela Vowinkel had 21 kills and 14 blocks, while Sarah Lushina added 25 kills, three blocks and five aces. Alyson Christl finished with 14 kills and three aces. Brooklyn Maw had 25 digs and four aces, while Savannah Smith finished with 10 digs. Courtney Hack had 44 assists and six digs, while McKenzie Price concluded the tourney with 32 assists, six kills and four aces.

"I was pleased with our passing," Carson coach Robert Maw said. "Our passing is coming along. Other teams were commenting on how quick we were (on offense) hitting."
