(AP) - Crews are battling a 300-acre wildfire that is threatening several homes in the Lyon County community of Smith Valley.
The fire was threatening structures and voluntary evacuations were taking place.
Helen Frazier of the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center says the blaze that started at 4 p.m. Friday is threatening homes between Upper and Lower Colony Road.
As of 9:30 p.m. more than 200 firefighters were working the fire where pinon-juniper burned. At the scene were 14 fire engines, three air tankers, three helicopters, one bulldozer and six hand crews.
Firefighters could be battling strong winds as the effort continues today. The forecast calls for southwest winds of 30-40 mph, along with thunderstorms.
Frazier says nine wildfires were reported late Friday afternoon.
