A well is being sunk on the lava beds on the Wood River. The Wood River News says: A few days ago the laborers struck a crevice in the casing of the shaft, and from that time up to date it has been an exciting spot to those whose duties kept them in the bottom. The rumbling of the earth kept a fine racket, and occasional blasts of air flirt up through the shaft, taking hats, etc., to the surface. Again the draft has changed, and anything near the windlass is drawn down and into the crevice and away - the Lord knows where.

The well at the Raycraft farm is down about 90 feet. During the past week it has been a case of fighting quicksand every inch of the way, which has retarded the work considerably. This is the first experimental well tackled by the state and it is giving the men in charge a good lot of experience.
