130 YEARS AGO

D.W. Balch, we are pleased to announce, is getting along satisfactorily from the effect of his pistol wounds and his physician considers him out of danger. A gentleman from Reno, who saw the man yesterday, informed the Appeal that Mr. Balch's condition seemed to be hourly improving.

100 YEARS AGO

While working in an old claim on the Comstock, a prospector uncovered a skeleton of a man. It is believed that the man is a relic of a crime that was committed long ago. It is believed the body of the man was partially charred by fire and the tunnel caved to hide the crime.

70 YEARS AGO

The Goodyear Rubber Company's blimp Reliance swung aloft early today on a 1,400-mile flight to Devil's Tower where the crew expects to pick Parachutist George Hopkins from his perch on the 857-foot granite peak.

50 YEARS AGO

(Photo caption) Richard Lane points out the long lost cornerstone of the Capitol building. The cornerstone was rediscovered by the State Buildings and Grounds department. The original laying of the cornerstone took place June 9, 1870. It was lost after being moved when the north and south wings were added in 1913-'14.

20 YEARS AGO

Clerks in the Elections Office are busy these days redistricting. Clerks using Census Bureau data are dividing the city into "maybe 46" precincts, several school trustee districts, five hospital districts and four supervisor wards.

10 YEARS AGO

Carson City wins an open space planning award form the Nevada Chapter of the American Planning Association DeBoer award for an outstanding cultural or environmental plan. Three pieces of property encompassing 96 acres have been protected from development under the plan.
