PREP ROUNDUP: Carson boys blank Hug

RENO - Carson High's boys soccer team kept its firm grip on first place with a 3-0 win over Hug Saturday afternoon in a Sierra League match.

The win moves Carson to 8-1-2 in Northern 4A play heading into Wednesday night's home match at 7 p.m. against arch-rival Douglas.

"Today was a huge win for us to see where we were as a team," CHS coach Eric Masters said. "Last year I thought we peaked too soon, and this year we're getting to that pinnacle. I took a different approach this year."

Masters said his players are much more rested at this stage of the season, which should make a difference in the post-season.

Jason Martinez scored Carson's lone first-half goal on a penalty kick in the 25th minute, and then Evan Sanchez, the dynamic transfer from South Tahoe, gave the Senators a 2-0 lead when he scored from about 50 yards away, as Hug's goalie who is very short (5-3 or 5-4) was unable to deflect the ball. Chris Espinoza made it 3-0 in the 55th minute.

Carson blanks Hug 7-0

RENO - Kaitlyn Holmes and Josilyn Daggs scored two goals apiece to lead the Senators to an easy Sierra League win over the Hawks.

Carson led 1-0 at the half, and when coach Randy Roser inserted his starters in the second half, Carson couldn't be stopped.

Midfielder Kenzie Tillitt butted heads with a Hug player and cut her forehead above the eyebrow. She was bleeding and had to leave the game, but is expected to be ready for Tuesday's game against first-place Douglas.

"She got a couple of stitches," Roser said. "She's already been cleared. She said she was good to go."

Chantal Torres, Kiahna Pimental and Jamie Perez scored Carson's other goals.

VOLLEYBALL

Reed tops Dayton in four

DAYTON - The Dayton volleyball team played powerful Reed close but couldn't pull out a victory falling in four games

Dayton lost 19-25, 25-20, 26-28 and 18-25. Despite the loss, coach Monica Halverson was pleased with the way the Dust Devils played.

"They played awesome," Halverson said. She said the Dust Devils were down to eight players and they all played key roles in the game.

Leading Dayton was Madison Foley with 15 kills, eight blocks and a dig; Erin Edison had six kills and eight blocks; Cora Jeffreys added four kills, an ace and 25 assists; and Cassie Depew added five kills, six blocks and three digs.

On Friday, the Dust Devils swept Silver State 25-8, 25-13 and 25-20. Foley and Edison led the team with six kills a piece. Jeffreys added 12 assists and three aces. Depew added four blocks.

Dayton is now 6-5 and hosts Yerington on Wednesday.

CROSS COUNTRY

Dayton boys take fourth

WINNEMUCCA - Dayton runners lowered their times Friday at the Lowry Invitational held at the Winnemucca golf course.

"It was a super-fast 5K course considering that all of my runners took anywhere from 1:40 to 3 minutes off their time from what they ran in Fernley last week," said Dayton coach Shawn Anderson. "And, they all improved their times from last year on the same course. I was very pleased with their performance."

The boys took fourth out of nine teams. Joe Law took back his crown from Aaron finishing in ninth place (17:46) out of 73 runners. Elissa came in 12th (17:57). Skyler Rose was 25th (18:59), Jamie Woods 39th (19:31), Nick Langstaff 47th (19:59) and Phillip Hevener in 65th (21:54).

Katrina Breithaupt finished in third place this week after winning her last two races. Breithaupt ran a 19:51, an improvement by 49 seconds off her time from last year.

In the JV girls race, Kaia Galloway finished in 12th place with a time of 24:50.

JV FOOTBALL

Carson pounds Douglas 48-0

Nevin Elliott and Andrew Gutierrez rushed for two touchdowns apiece to lead Carson High's junior varsity football squad to a 48-0 win over arch-rival Douglas Thursday night at Carson.

Elliott carried four times for 100 yards, including scoring runs of 20 and 69 yards. Gutierrez carried nine times for 67 yards, and both of his scores came in the first quarter. He had 64 yards in the first half.

Carson led 28-0 at the half and cruised from there. The Senators finished with 443 yards total offense, 112 through the air by Garrett Schafer and 331 on the ground.

Austin Kiesow finished with 43 yards and a score on 10 carries, while Austin Shaffer had seven carries for 36 yards and a score. Garrett Schafer rushed for a score, while Anthony Estrada carried seven times for 75 yards.

Kyle Denning had three catches for 36 yards, while Austin Shaffer had three grabs for 26 yards.

Cody Cunningham led the defense with 16 tackles, while Andy Cooper added 14 stops. Shaffer had 12 tackles and Gehrig Tucker had six tackles and two recovered fumbles.
