History lecture on Kit Carson

Kit Carson is coming to the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center, 1477 Highway 395 N., Gardnerville, 7 p.m. Thursday.

Carson's leadership earned him the rank of brigadier general in the Civil War and whose heroic deeds, woodland skills and bravery opened the west.

Richard Clark will present a Chautauqua performance. He has had a lifetime of presenting, teaching, and working with people. This, combined with years of historical research, has culminated into the resurrection of arguably the most famous character of the old west.

Learn about ADA and parks organizations

John McGovern, the president of Recreation Accessibility Consultants offers a free lecture from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Marlette Hall, Cedar 100, WNC Carson City.

The RAC is an organization that advises parks and recreation agencies, cities, counties, states and private entities about compliance with the American with Disabilities Act, and McGovern will speak about key changes to the Americans with Disability Act Amendments Act. The lecture is presented in honor of Disability Awareness Month.

Senior center craft supply sale planned

The Douglas County Senior Center Huge Craft Supply Sale starts 8 a.m. Oct. 26. Supplies for crafts of every kind will be offered, including quilting supplies, beads, craft books, fabric, lace, ribbon, etc.

Bingo Nite planned at St. Gall

The Knights of Columbus have set the date of Nov. 11 for the Douglas County Historical Society "Bingo Nite."

Doors open at 6 p.m. Games go from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at St. Gall Catholic Church in Gardnerville. Cost is $21, which includes three warm-up games, 10 regular games and a black game. Extra packets are $5. The event is a fundraiser for the Historical Society.

Hotdogs, hamburgers, wine, beer, coffee and soft drinks will be available.

Young At Heart annual Holiday Craft Fair is scheduled Nov. 19 at the Douglas County Senior Center, 2300 Meadow Lane, Gardnerville. There will be music, food and shopping. The snack bar will also be serving food. Vendors are welcome. For information, call 265-2312 or 783-6455.

Love to be discussed at worship service

Western Nevadans are invited to learn more about "The Language of Love" at a worship service 10 a.m. Saturday at the Carson City Community Center, Roop and William streets. The session is sponsored by Eckankar, Religion of the Light and Sound of God.

Benefit concert to protect national historic landmark

Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks will play Pipers Opera House in Virginia City on Oct. 22 to benefit preservation of the Virginia City National Historic Landmark, where open-pit mining has been proposed. Doors open at 7 p.m., and showtime is at 7:30 p.m.

Hicks' history on the Comstock goes back more than 45 years to the summer of 1965. The Red Dog Saloon was created in Virginia City by a group of Bay Area bohemians, artists, musicians, poets, plumbers, house painters and Indians, among others.

Hicks took a special interest when he heard of the proposal to reopen the Comstock Historic District to mining.

A meet-and-greet will be held at the Red Dog Saloon after the concert and is limited to 100 guests. Advance tickets to the concert are $35 at The Bead Store in Carson City or Recycled Records in Reno. Tickets for the concert and the post-concert meet-and-greet are $42.50. Fire restrictions lifted

The Bureau of Land Management Carson City District Office and the Nevada Division of Forestry's Sierra Forest Fire Protection District have lifted fire restrictions that have been in place since July 23.

Decreasing daily sunlight, increasing fuel moisture levels and unseasonably cool temperatures are allowing the agencies to lift fire restrictions, but officials note that wildfire still is possible, even though there has been rain and snow. Warren Engine Co. hosting open house

Warren Engine Co. No. 1 will hold an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at its fire museum at the Carson City Fire Station, 777 S. Stewart St.

The museum boasts an extensive collection of antique firefighting equipment from the volunteer fire department's storied past. Among the items on display are an 1846 Hunneman hand pumper, a 1913 Seagrave fire engine, numerous hose carts and the recently restored circa 1900 chemical fire suppression cart. Also on display are photographs of Warren Engine Co. members beginning with its founding in June 1863. Warren Engine Co. is the oldest continuously operating volunteer fire department on the West Coast. The open house is free to the public. It follows the Nevada firefighters memorial ceremony, which begins at 10 a.m. at Mills Park.

Not just another 'Night at the Museum'

The Carson City Leisure Hour Club will host Peter Barton as their monthly speaker beginning at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 19 upstairs at the Carson Nugget.

Following dinner, his presentation titled Not Just Another "Night at the Museum" takes a look at the State of Nevada's dynamic group of museums and how they are adapting to the challenges they are facing today.

Barton serves as the administrator for the Nevada Division of Museums and History, overseeing the development, operations and programs of Nevada's seven state-sponsored museums. Prior to relocating to Nevada, Peter spent 35 years managing museums and historical organizations from coast to coast.

In addition to his professional work, Barton serves on the Preserve Nevada Board and as appointed chair of the Carson City Cultural Commission.

The Leisure Club of Carson City is the oldest continuously meeting organization in the city, having been founded in September 1896. The group's activities continue to support its goal of promoting the knowledge on important issues, science, music and literature.

CV Footprinters monthly meeting scheduled

The Carson Valley Footprinters will hold its monthly dinner meeting on Oct. 20 at the Carson Valley Inn in the Town of Minden. A no host bar starts at 6 p.m. and meeting begins at 7 p.m. Guest speakers will be WWII bombardier gunners, Ernie and Everett Steddman and their buddy Richard Wheeler. Prepare for the Pinewood Derby on Saturday

A free car cutting derby in preparation for the annual Nevada Day Pinewood Derby will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at American Family Insurance, 1621 E. Highway 50 in Carson City. All kids in attendance will get a free car kit to put into the Nevada Day races on Oct. 29.

The clinic will be hosted by the track record holder, Rick Frewert. One free car kit per child aged 16 and younger.

The Nevada Day derby will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 at the Carson Mall. Entry is free and open to all kids ages 6 to 16. There's even a category for ages 17 and older.

Author to speak during Sunday service

Jerry Cook, pastor and author of books "Love, Acceptance and Forgiveness" and "The Monday Morning Church" will be speaking at the Fountainhead Foursquare Church at the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service.

Wood's work to be featured in BAC gallery

Dayton artist JoAnn Wood is the next featured artist in the "Summer Features Show" at the Brewery Arts Center Gallery. Wood's works in water color, pastels and acrylics will be displayed on the gallery's coveted back wall from Oct. 13-21

Bunko for breast cancer slated Friday

GE employees host bunko for breast cancer event from 6-11 p.m. Friday at the ballroom at the Carson Valley Inn. The event will support Carson Tahoe Hospital's Cancer Resource Center. Co-sponsored by GE Energy and the Carson Valley Inn, this event has raised more than $200,000 in the fight against cancer. All profits stay locally to help Northern Nevada cancer patients. The evening features emcees, raffles and door prizes provided by community members and GE employees. There also are costumes to fit the theme, this year's being "The Roaring '20s." Abowd & Rose Financial Group and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada are hosting an event to help local families in the Northern Nevada on Saturday.

It will take place from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the club at 1870 Russell Way.

Abowd & Rose Financial Group has teamed with MassMutual Life Insurance Company to offer eligible families $50,000 in term life insurance coverage free of charge.

MassMutual pays all policy costs, and the $50,000 benefit can be used by families to cover educational expenses for children in the event a parent or legal guardian passes away unexpectedly.  Since the program launched in 2002, MassMutual has given away more than 12,000 policies totaling over $600 million in coverage.

Parents and legal guardians between the ages of 19 and 42 can apply for the program. To be eligible, applicants must also have one or more dependent child under the age of 18, be working full or part-time with a total annual family income between $10,000 and $40,000 and be permanent, legal residents of the United States.  Applicants must also be deemed in good health by MassMutual's underwriting guidelines.
