PREPS: Carson golf team falls short; Justice advances

After a disappointing 343 during the first day of Northern 4A golf regionals, the Carson girls golf team rallied to shoot a 318. The team moved from fifth after Monday's round at Empire Ranch to third place - missing the state tournament by one spot.

Spanish Springs (638) and McQueen (654) are moving on. Carson was third followed by Manogue and Douglas.

"It was an unbelievable comeback," coach Jeff Rispin said. "I told the girls that have nothing to lose and they played really loose."

Qualifying for the state tournament as an individual was Megan Justice who shot a 75 Tuesday (160 total). Heather Evans shot an 81 for a 163 total, just two strokes off from qualifying.

Ali Vondrak shot a 77, taking 15 strokes off from Monday's score; and Taylor Krupp shot an 85. Kristen Good shot a non-scoring 92 and Kahlia Wahpepah shot a non-scoring 95.

The state tournament takes place next Wednesday and Thursday in Las Vegas.

VOLLEYBALL

Carson sweeps Hug

RENO - Carson tuned up for its rivalry showdown with Douglas at home on Thursday by sweeping Hug 25-11, 25-17 and 25-11 on Tuesday night.

"We did a lot of serving and they had trouble handling the ball," Carson coach Robert Maw said. "They weren't able to put up much of an attack. It was a league win and we'll take it."

Courtney Hack had six aces and 19 assists, while McKenzie Price had nine assists, two kills and three aces. Sarah Lushina finished with 10 kills, six digs and three aces, while Laura Mohlnkamp had four kills and two digs. Alyson Christl contributed six digs, two kills and an ace.

Sierra Lutheran knocks off Sage Ridge

The Sierra Lutheran volleyball team knocked off Sage Ridge 25-11, 25-6 and 25-23 on Tuesday at Sierra Lutheran High School.

Leading the Falcons was Tiffany Patrick with 19 assists, 10 aces and a kill; Hannah Ediss with 10 aces, seven kills and a block; Cheyenne Contreras five kills, three aces and a dig; and Amy Westre with five kills and block.

Sierra Lutheran hosts Virginia City starting at 4 p.m. Thursday. They then hosts Pyramid Lake on Friday starting at 4 p.m.

Douglas topped by Spanish Springs

Douglas High's Heidi Schefick had 10 digs and nine service points and Savannah Wood collected 13 kills and five blocks in Spanish Springs' 25-21, 25-14 and 25-22 win over the Tigers on Tuesday.

Shawnee McFadden added seven digs, two blocks and four kills, while Amanda Wartgow had a kill, two blocks, six digs and two aces.

CROSS COUNTRY

Sierra Lutheran runners fare well

Sierra Lutheran's Luke Barulich was 15th at the Reed Invitational on Friday. Barulich ran in 18:37. Donovan Harrison took 21st (18:58), John McRae was 22nd (19:01) and Wyatt Hicks was 41st (20:28).

Becky Grabow took eighth in the girls' race (19:24) and Erin Henry was 66th with a time of 21:01.

Nathanael Williams took 17th in the boys race with a time of 15:47.

JV SOCCER

Carson, Douglas battle to draw

Carson and Douglas battled to a scoreless draw in a JV girls matc on Tuesday.

Carson's Carly Bachmann had 25 saves. natalie Young also was praised for her defensive work.

Becca Matley and Arlette Mariscal played well offensively for the Senators

TENNIS

Carson players win matches

Ben Drozdoff won his singles play-in match 6-1, 7-5 to advance to bracket play in the Northern 4A regionals at Carson High School Tuesday afternoon.

On the girls' side, Camilla Dudley and Krista Stocke won 6-3, 6-4 against a Wooster team it had lost to in the regular season.

Play continues today at 2:30 p.m. at both Carson High (boys) and Centennial Park (girls).
