Those who live on the west side of Carson City or drove by the Firkin & Fox Saturday morning would have seen more than 550 walkers and runners of all ages dressed in pink to support The Pink Totties thirc annual Cancer Firkin Sucks 5k presented by the Firkin & Fox Pub.
Music could be heard downtown as the runners took off through the state of the art start line with flat screen TVs and a timing system that read their numbers as they crossed.
Anytime Fitness, Carson High Volleyball and Carson Middle School Cross Country came out in huge numbers and ran the race to support the cause. The CHS cheerleaders were there and cheered on their peers and the other participants. Results for the race can be seen at www.PinkTotties.com.
"Our little race has grown into one of the biggest races in the area, including Reno," said Heidi McFadden, member of the Pink Totties. "The first year, we had about 160, last year 417, and this year over 550. We appreciate everyone who signed up, who volunteered and, of course, our sponsors."
Overall winner was Kirk Ferris.
The 2011 sponsors for the event included the Firkin & Fox Pub, Carson Surgical Group, Carson-Tahoe Hospital, Platinum DJ's, Don Garcia Excavating and Paving, Orange Sky Events and Farmer's Insurance Jeff Brooks Agency.
The Pink Totties grossed nearly $20,000 from the event. Net proceeds benefit The Susan G. Komen Foundation's Breast Cancer 3 Day, and a portion goes to The Carson Tahoe Cancer Foundation.
The Pink Totties are a group of local women who formed a team for the Breast Cancer 3 Day. They formed their nonprofit organization in 2009 and have since become huge fundraisers for the fight against Breast Cancer.
