Cash to be added to firefighters' memorial

Nevada Division of Forestry Capt. Paul S. Cash of Elko's name will be added to the Nevada Firefighters' Memorial in Carson City on Saturday, bringing to 64 the number of Nevada firefighters memorialized on the wall after having lost their lives in the line of duty.

The 10 a.m. ceremony is open to the public and will be held at the Nevada Firefighters' Memorial, on the east side of Carson City's Mills Park. The ceremony will conclude the weeklong observance of National Fire Prevention Week in Nevada.

Cash, whose name has already been added to the International Association of Fire Fighters Memorial in Colorado Springs, died at the age of 39 on Feb. 26 as the result of a Hantavirus infection. The Elko County coroner's report indicated that Cash's exposure to Hantavirus was work-related.

Cash began his career with the Nevada Division of Forestry as a seasonal firefighter in 1990. He became a full-time firefighter with NDF in 1996, and was promoted to captain in 2006.

Members of the East Fork Fire & Paramedic Districts and Carson City Fire Department honor guards will lead a combined fire service honor guard during the ceremony and will conduct a firefighter memorial bell

ceremony.

After the memorial ceremony, plaques bearing the names of the late Jim Allison, chief of the Fallon-Churchill County Fire Department, and retired Carson City Battalion Chief Jim Powell will be dedicated on the distinguished-service section of the memorial. The additions of Allison and Powell will bring the number of Nevada firefighters to be recognized since 1997 to 15.
