ROUNDUP: Carson freshmen win

RENO - Down 6-0 at the half, Carson scored 34 second-half points en rout to a 34-14 victory over Damonte Ranch in freshman football action Thursday night.

Colby Brown took the second half kickoff and scampered 99 yards for his fourth kickoff return of the season to tie the game.

Later in the quarter Brown scored on a 10-yard run. Corey Reid added the point after.

In the fourth quarter, linebacker Mike Wemheuer stripped the Damonte quarterback in the endzone and Josue Moralez-Orozco landed on the ball for a defensive touchdown. Reid's kick game Carson a 20-6 lead.

Brady Rivera then broke the game open with a 50-yard run for a 26-6 lead.

After Damonte cut the lead to 26-14, Carson iced the game on a 50-yard pass from Skyler Fitch to Brandon Maffei. Reid added a two-point conversion for the final score.

Coach Billy McHenry praised the linebacker play of Nolan Shine and Wemheuer along with the offensive line play of Jaremiah Abbott, Brent Lauderbaugh, Devin Mathews, Brandon Allen and Jesse Medina, and tight ends Jacob Guthrie and Conrad Franz.

Carson improved to 2-4.

TENNIS

Carson doubles teams lose

RENO - Carson High's tennis hopes are down to Emily Collins and Blake Sly in singles after four doubles teams were eliminated on Thursday afternoon at Caughlin Athletic Club.

On the boys' side, Spenser Hollenbeck-Pringle and Connor Fallon lost 6-3 and 7-5 the No. 5 seeded team out of the High Desert League. Matt Bogs and Casey Reid lost a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 decision to McQueen.

On the girls' side, Krista Stocke and Camilla Dudley were blanked 6-0 and 6-0, and Maddi Saarem and Ellise McGowan were knocked off 7-5 and 6-2.

Saarem and McGowan had 5-2 lead in the first set and lost the next nine games.

Collins plays in the quarterfinals today at 8 a.m., while Sly plays at 9:30.

Dayton girls blanked

INCLINE VILLAGE - The Dust Devils played hard throughout, but still came out on the short end of a 5-0 score against Incline on Thursday in a Northern 3A game.

Despite the loss, Dayton is still in the running for the playoffs. Dayton coach Jared Miklich figures the Dust Devils need to win three of their next five games to make it. That journey starts today with a home match against Sparks.

Miklich praised the play of forwards Erika McCoy and Maribel Ledezma, midfielder Serena Pistilli and defenders Savannah Parsons and Cassidy Council.
