Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels: Silver to young hero who saved grandma

The Nevada Appea's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the V&T Railroad Commission, for its plan to require five counties to help with the operating costs of the historic railroad. Under the plan, Carson City and Storey County would each pay $55,00 a year, Douglas would pay $45,000, Lyon would pay $25,000 and Washoe would pay $70,000. Since the benefits are shared, so should the costs be.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Nevada Humane Society and a group of volunteers for rescuing 11 cats from the home of a deceased Virginia City resident.

WOODEN NICKEL: To the Republican presidential candidates who said they won't campaign in Nevada if the state's Republican shot-callers don't rescind a plan to move the GOP primary date up.

SILVER DOLLAR: To 8-year-old Philip Maita, who administered the Heimlich Maneuver when his grandmother, Phyllis Maita, choked on some meat this week. Philip said he had once seen his father perform the maneuver and learned from the experience.
