Justice shoots another 98 at state; Terada comes back with a 79

LAS VEGAS - Carson High's Megan Justice shot a second consecutive 98 on the Bear's Best Golf Course Thursday at the NIAA 4A State Golf Championships.

Justice's 198 put her well behind individual winner Alex Kuai of Green Valley, who won with a 36-hole total of 146.

Douglas High's Koko Terada shot a 79, an 11-shot improvement over her opening round. She finished at 169.

The top finisher in the north was Bishop Manogue's Elyse Levy whose 159 was good enough for seventh place. Spanish Springs' Katrina Prendergast was 11th at 165.

Green Valley won the team title with a 629 followed by Faith Lutheran at 643. Coronado was third at 672 followed by Bishop Gorman 703, Spanish Springs 722 and McQueen 756.

CROSS COUNTRY

Sierra Lutheran boys win at ROP

YERINGTON - Led by Nathaneal Williams, Sierra Lutheran's boys' cross-country team won the Rite of Passage Invitational Thursday afternoon.

Williams cruised the course in 16:15. Teammates Donovan Harrison (17:56) and Luke Barulich (18:02) were fifth and eighth, respectively. John McRae was 12th in 18:35 and Jonny Harms was 26th in 19:20.

Dayton's Aaron Elissa was seventh in 18 minutes, Joe Law was 14th in 18:41, Skyler Rose was 17th in 18:50, Jamie Woods was 37th in 20 minutes and Nick Langstaff was was 64th in 21:11.

On the girls' side, Becky Grabow was first in 20:07, beating Dayton's Katrina Breithaupt by 12 seconds. Sierra Lutheran's Erin Henry was eighth in 21:29.

Sierra Stulac was first in the JV girls race at 24:47 and Abby Williams was fourth in 26:26.

Carson sweps Wooster

RENO - The Senators climbed over the .500 mark with a 26-24, 25-12 and 25-16 win over Wooster in a Sierra League match.

Carson improved to 8-7 and will be off until its regular-season finale at home against Galena.

'We came out and hit well," coach Robert Maw said. "Wooster did a good job of blocking us in the middle."

The Colts led 22-15, but Sarah Lushina served up seven straight points, tying the game at 22. Carson went on to win, and Maw praised the play of Laura Mohlenkamp. who finished the match with four digs, four kills and a block.

Carson easily won the final two games, and Maw said that Wooster was obviously down after Carson's big first-game rally.

Lushina led the Senators with three aces, eight digs and 13 kills. Brooklyn Maw had 15 digs, while McKenzie Price finished with two aces, a kill, dig and 19 assists. Courtney Hack finished with a kill and 11 assists. Savannah Smith had three digs and two kills as a defensive specialist, while Kristalei Wolfe had five kills and two blocks, Micaela Vowinkel had four digs, three kills and three blocks.

Manogue sweeps Douglas

RENO - Bishop Manogue swept Douglas 25-15, 25-12 and 25-23 in a Sierra League match Thursday night.

Savannah Wood and Jenna Brussard led in kills with seven and six, respectively. Shawnee McFadden and Heidi Schefcik led in digs with 13 and seven. Hailey Sclafani dished out 21 assists.

Dayton boys lose

ZEPHYR COVE - The Dust Devils played one of their better matches of the season, but fell just short, 4-2, to Whittell.

Whittell led 2-1 at the half. Raul Rojas had Dayton's only goal. Leo Rodriguez scored Dayton's second goal.

"We played really well," Dayton coach Karl Watts said. "The last two games have ben our best of the season. It's great we're finally narrowing the gap with teams."

ZEPHYR COVE - Dayton was missing several key players becaus of illness and ineligibility and suffered a 5-0 loss to Whittell.

The loss may have ended Dayton's playoff chances. Dayton finishes with games against North Tahoe (Tuesday) and Truckee (Thursday).

"We had to play a girl who had never played goalie befor and we only had one sub," Dayton coach Jared Miklich. "I think we can still make it, but I'm sure we'd have to beat both North Tahoe and Truckee."

Carson blanks Spanish Springs

Colby Brown scored three first-half touchdowns to lead Carson to a 32-0 win over Spanish Springs Thursday at Carson.

Brown scored on runs of 5, 80 and 20, the third one coming right before the half and giving the Senators an 18-0 lead.

Brady Rivera opened the second half with a 60-yard scoring run, Charlie Hersey scored the final TD on a 15-yard run. Nolan Shine threw a conversion pass to Rivera for the final points.

Coach Billy McHenry praised the play of Caden Lehman and Jon Ramirez, both of whom picked off passes. Defensive ends Josue Orozco and Thomas Perez, and linebackers Shine, Seamus Burns, Rivera and Michael Wemheuer also played well.

Carson improved to 3-4.
