Rally to be held for wild horse solutions

Wild horse advocates are gathering in front of the Legislative Building, 401 S. Carson St., at 11 a.m. Tuesday in an attempt to stop the Nevada Department of Agriculture from sending the Virginia Range Horses to slaughter. They are inviting anyone who wants to support their cause to attend.

In past years, cooperative agreements were issued to local nonprofit horse groups by the Nevada Department of Agriculture to allow groups to not only help keep horses off the highways, but to keep the horse population numbers down on the open range, said wild horse advocate Bonnie Matton.

"It also allowed the groups to foster horses that had to be removed until such time as permanent placement was arranged so that horses were not exposed to kill buyers at auction. Cooperative agreements were canceled in 2009, then the problems began," she said.

Annual library book sale in Minden

The Douglas County Public Library offers its annual fall book sale from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 12 at the CVIC Hall, 1602 Esmeralda Ave., Minden.

Hundreds of used books, audio books and children's books will be for sale. DVDs and VHS tapes also will be available. A preview will be held from 9-11 a.m. that day for members of The Friends of the Douglas County Public Library. Become a member and attend the preview by joining the Friends of the Library at the door Saturday morning. Save 10 percent and get first choice of sale items at the special preview.

Art exhibit at Carson City's BRIC

"Lost Soles," a photography exhibit by Nancy Raven of kids' shoes found on Del Monte Beach in Monterey, Calif., will be featured for a year starting in November at Carson City's Business Resource Innovation Center, 108 E. Proctor St.

Raven's photos represent 21 years of morning walks, and no shoe was collected unless it was alone.

Free Nevada Day concert offered

The Capital City Community Band will open its 33rd concert season with a free old-fashioned band concert for the public at 4 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Nevada State Railroad Museum.

The concert will feature a variety of music, and children are invited to attend with their parents. The band will perform Sousa marches, Broadway tunes, patriotic music and will have its own musical locomotive race. For more information, call Richard Doede at 775-883-2219.

Clearance sale at CTRH Auxiliary gift shop

The Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Auxiliary Gift Shop will hold a Halloween/Harvest Clearance Sale.

The sale starts on Monday and continues through Thursday. All Halloween, harvest and Thanksgiving merchandise will be 30 percent off, while the rest of the gift shop will be discounted 25 percent. All candy, greeting cards and flowers are excluded from discounts. The sale will help clear out current merchandise in order to make room for new holiday items, so shoppers can start early. Proceeds will benefit the auxiliary in support of the Regional Medical Center, nursing scholarships and Regional Healthcare needs.

CVAA seeking artists for benefit show

The Carson Valley Art Association is seeking artists for its scholarship benefit show Nov. 3-6 in the CVIC Hall. This is a judged show.

Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded to Best in Show and to seven media, as well as a Peoples Choice ribbon and several Honorable Mention ribbons. As a result of this show, CVAA is able to award scholarships to continuing Douglas High School art students. Fate of Dayton Community Center to be discussed

The future of Dayton's Community Center Building, originally built in 1861, is in the hands of its residents.

A discussion and possible action to develop a recommendation to the Lyon County Board of Commissioners for the management and maintenance of the Dayton Community Center will take place at the next Dayton Regional Advisory Council meeting, at 7 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Lyon County Office Complex at 34 Lakes Blvd.

The current building, on Dayton's Pike street, was part of the original Overland Trail used by emigrants to the West. It was built partially with salvaged masonry from the original 1864 Dayton Courthouse, which had occupied the same site, 170 Pike St., until it burned in 1909.

The existing community center building was built in 1918 and used as Dayton's high school until the late 1950s. It now houses the offices of Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey counties, Central Lyon County Youth Connections, Rural Nevada Clinic and some employees of Lyon County Human Services.

The recommendations to be discussed at the meeting include allowing a nonprofit to take over management of the building or creating a nonprofit to manage the building. Ideas and input from the public are encouraged. For information, call Elmer Wolf at 220-1224 or email daytonrac@gmail.com.

GOP Women offer Nevada Day Pancake Breakfast

The Carson City Republican Women's Club will host its annual Nevada Day Pancake Breakfast from 7-9:30 a.m. Oct. 29 in the Nevada Room of the Governor's Mansion, 606 N. Mountain St. The breakfast will include pancakes, scrambled eggs, ham, orange juice and coffee. Tickets are available at the door and will cost $6 for adults and $3 for children under 10 years of age.

Gov. Brian Sandoval will present awards to the finalists of the Governor's Constitution Poster and Essay Contest.

Nevada State Museum presents "Wild at Heart: the Artist's Journey"

In celebration of "Nevada's Great Outdoors," this year's Nevada Day theme, naturalist Roy Purcell presents a book signing and lecture from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 27 at the museum.

The book signing for Purcell's illustrated text on Great Basin plants and animals, Portraits of Nature, begins at 6 p.m., followed by a lecture on the artist's journey from 7-8 p.m.. JC Penney joins with Boys & Girls Club for fundraiser

Shoppers at the JC Penney store in Carson City are invited to turn small change into "pennies from heaven" by rounding up their purchases and donating the difference to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada.

The club is one of 1,100 after-school organizations from across the country matched with a local JC Penney store that will benefit from the proceeds raised during the campaign.

"For more than a decade, JC Penney has been deeply committed to helping kids spread their wings by making it possible for more students to participate in life-enriching afterschool programs," said William Schipper, store manager. The USSF licensed coaching staff joins Capital Soccer Club in celebrating another successful season by offering a free players and coaches clinic.

The clinic will be from 9 a.m.-noon Nov. 12 at the Edmonds Sports Complex.

Nevada Wolf Pack soccer coaches and players and Capital Soccer Club staff will be available for a variety of training sessions.

The clinic is for ages 5 to 18.

Western Nevada College Classified Employee Council invites the public to its annual fall craft fair from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 3 at WNC Carson City.

The fair is offering shoppers a chance to peruse local vendors' offerings, which in past years have included clothing, art, ceramics, jewelry, photography and foods. The deadline for vendors to participate has passed.
