Magallon saves Senators in scoreless draw

It was Senior Night at Carson High on Tuesday, and Marco Magallon went out in style.

Magallon made seven saves, including two diving stops and a ball that he deflected over the crossbar, as the Senators and Galena battled to a scoreless tie in the regular-season finale for both schools.

Carson, the regular-season champ, finished with a 11-2-3 record. The Senators will host the fourth-place team from the High Desert League next Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Magallon has shared time this year with Gustavo Villagrana, but coach Eric Masters said that the senior will be the starter in goal for the playoff opener.

Magallon, who didn't play against Manogue on Saturday, said that not playing every game hasn't made a difference to him.

"It's all the same," he said. "I prepare every week like I'm going to play. I always have to be at the top of my game in case I need to go in.

"I think they were trying to go with more numbers up top. It didn't work, though."

It did to the degree that Galena outshot Carson 17-7.

"They sent a lot of guys," Carson coach Eric Masters said. "It's really hard to defend when they are sending so many. Marco made some good saves and gave us a clean sheet.

"We didn't play well. Tonight was all about the seniors. We played seniors who normally don't get to play a lot. We didn't get in a good rhythm. We had a game plan going in and we stuck with it. We wanted to keep everybody safe."

Galena outshot Carson 7-5 in the opening 40 minutes, but neither team could find the back of the net. Carson's Sam Hutchinson had a good look in the fifth minute, but sent his shot high and wide. Evan Sanchez's header in the 10th minute went over the crossbar.

Galena's Francisco Arambula, Nolan Cobin and Ian Smith all came up empty after good looks in the opening half.

Galena kept putting on the pressure in the second half.

In the 59th minute, Cobin pounded one that Magallon was fortunate enough to deflect over his head off the football goalpost which gave the Grizzlies a corner kick. Magallon also stopped Cobin in the 70th minute, too.

Masters said it's a matter of staying the course as his team prepares for its playoff opener.

"I think we've played well the last three game," he said. "We know what we're capable of doing. We kept a clean sheet (shutout). We have to take care of our scoring chances and keep the sheet clean."

Douglas boys edge Damonte

MINDEN - Tuesday night's season finale amounted to a playoff game for the Douglas boys' soccer team.

The Tigers responded accordingly, beating Damonte Ranch 1-0 to post their first win over a playoff-caliber team in two years.

"It's what the boys' needed, to finish the season positively," Douglas coach Vince Brown said. "It was a rebuilding year and we took large strides as a team this year.

"We got a few extra points in the standings than we did last year, but when we were losing last year, we were losing badly. Now we're in games against the Carsons and the North Valleys out there. We were battling all the way through and when we lost, the kids were annoyed about it. They showed a lot of desire to get better."

The teams played evenly through a scoreless first half before Douglas senior Scott Chandler got the Tigers on the board with a nice shot from the far right wing in the 50th minute.

"That was a good way for him to finish up," Brown said.

Tiger keeper Francisco Sanchez posted his fourth shutout of the year in the win.

North Tahoe pounds Dayton 11-1

The Dayton High boys' soccer team dropped a Northern 3A game at North Tahoe on Tuesday.

The Lakers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the opening six minutes and led 7-0 at the half.

Trailing 10-0 in the 74th minute, Leo Rodriguez got behind the North Tahoe defense and beat goalie Jose Chavez 1-on-1 to put the Dust Devils on the board. The Lakers added a final goal in the last minute to cap the rout.

Douglas tops Damonte

MINDEN - Douglas topped Damonte Ranch 4-2 to finish its season 5-9-2.

The Tigers' first goal was an own goal charged against Damonte. Emanuel Montoya scored the second unassisted and Oliver Lopez scored the final two off corner kicks from Carlos Lopez.

Damonte added a pair of late goals to set the score at its final.

Carson JVs win 1-0

Carson's JV team concluded its season at 8-3-5 with a 1-0 win over Galena on Tuesday night at Carson.

Danny Limon scored the game's only goal, while Gustavo Villagrana recorded the shutout in goal.

Douglas tops Galena in 4

MINDEN - Savannah Wood had 11 kills and four blocks to lead Douglas to a 24-26, 25-23, 25-17 and 26-24 win over Galena Tuesday in a Sierra League match.

Amanda Wartgow contributed nine kills, four blocks and four digs, while Cassi Uhart had eight digs, a block and three kills. Heidi Schefcik finished with 14 digs and Hailey Sclafani had 38 assists, four aces, two kills and a block.

Douglas is 6-9 in league play.

Sierra Lutheran tops Smith Valley

Visiting Sierra Lutheran fell behind 2-0, but rebounded to win the next three games and the match against Smith Valley 19-25, 25-27, 25-18, 28-26 and 15-6.

Tiffany Patrick led Sierra Lutheran with six kills, two blocks, eight aces and 23 assists. Hannah Edis added nine kills and five blocks while Jessica Olsen finished with 11 kills.

In JV action, Sierra Lutheran won 19-25, 25-20 and 16-14.

Emily Fernandez had nine kills while Amy Westre finished with three kills and a block. Natalie Echeverria and Katie Cobb finished with six assists apiece.

CROSS COUNTRY

Carson JV boys take 4th

SPARKS - Carson High's boys JV team finished fourth at Tuesday's Spanish Springs Invitational.

Anthony Cacioppo took seventh overall in 19:56, while Tylar Chester was eighth in 19:59. Tony Xie was the third Carson finisher in 20:50 good for 20th place, while Bryen Holloway ran a 21:20. Andrew Cowan was the final scorer for Carson, running a 21:34.

Coach Pete Sinnott said that Cacioppo will run with the varsity as the seventh member at Friday's regional meet.

The Carson girls had just three runners, thus fielded an incomplete team. Lake Shank was the top Carson finisher at 26:28, good for 43rd place. Rosa De La Cruz ran a 29:49 and Hannah Novak ran a 32:54.
