Permits available for Christmas tree cutting

Christmas tree cutting permits are available from the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Carson Ranger District.

Approximately 4,000 permits will be available beginning on Monday, Nov. 21, and ending Dec. 24 or when permits are sold out.

Permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis for white fir, incense cedar, Jeffrey, and lodgepole pine trees. Two trees may be cut per household. Cost is $10, permits are non-refundable and are valid through Dec. 25. 

Designated cutting areas include portions of Dog Valley, Spooner Summit, Mt. Rose, Markleeville, Woodfords, Hope Valley and Wolf Creek.

Tree cutters should have their own saws, warm clothing, a first-aid kit, extra food and water, heavy rope or chain, shovel and tire chains, in the event of bad road conditions or inclement weather.

Some cutting areas may be inaccessible after snowfall, so it is advisable to cut trees early in the season.

 Permits must be purchased in person with cash or checks (credit/ATM cards are not accepted). Phone, mail, or email permit requests cannot be processed.

Tree permits are available at the following offices:

• Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest office: 1200 Franklin Way, Sparks, 775-331-6444, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

• Carson Ranger District Office: 1536 S. Carson St., Carson City, 775-882-2766, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.

• Galena Creek Visitor Center: 16750 Mt. Rose Highway, Reno, 775-849-4948, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

All forest service offices will be closed on Nov. 24.
