Senator Square: Senators show pride during homecoming week

Senator Pride can be defined as a high or inordinate opinion of Carson High School's importance, merit, or superiority, whether as cherished in the mind or as displayed in bearing, conduct, etc.

There is an overwhelming feeling of Senator Pride oozing from our halls. We just celebrated a very successful homecoming week, and I would like to give Misty Harris, activities director at CHS and the leadership students some public kudos for an amazing week of activities which celebrated CHS.

The conduct displayed by our student body as they watched our athletic teams dominate during the week definitely boosted pride among our students and staff.

Senator Pride is alive and well in our halls and in our community. Thank you for the support and congratulations to our staff, our athletes, our student body, our clubs and organizations for giving us even more reasons to be proud.

Congrats also to Zach Bruce and Camilla Dudley for being crowned 2011 CHS Homecoming King and Queen.

GREENHOUSE NEEDS HELP

The CHS greenhouse is about to receive the "certificate of occupancy." We're looking for volunteers to help assemble the greenhouse planting tables 10 a.m. Sunday. If you are able to make this fun activity, please bring a tape measure, impact wrench/drill, and 5/16 inch hex bits if you have them.

The greenhouse is located behind the main building. You can park in the north parking lot and walk back toward the football field. Contact Michelle Lewis at 283-1910 with questions.

CAPITAL FFA FUNDRAISER

CHS agriculture class and Capital FFA are selling Madagascar dragon trees for $10 each. Money raised from this fundraiser will help these clubs fund projects for the new greenhouse on campus at CHS.

Ag educator Steve Dilley says the trees make great houseplants and are approximately 2 feet tall. To purchase a plant, contact Dilley at sdilley@carson.k12.nv.us.

VETERANS TO BE HONORED

The Carson High School Naval Junior ROTC Unit will be hosting its annual Veterans Day Ceremony at 10:45 a.m. Nov. 10. The unit will be recognizing veterans from different wars and extend a special invitation to them.

The ceremony will take place in CHS Senator Square. Veterans are invited for refreshments after the ceremony, compliments of the culinary classes.

Also, the Naval Junior ROTC Unit will conduct its annual military inspection at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 16 on the soccer field behind the NJROTC Center. It includes a pass-in-review of the company and performances by two drill teams.

Cadet Lt. Cmdr. Rhett Petrenko will lead the cadets in the review. Col. Chandler, the commanding officer for the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center, Pickel Meadow, Calif., will be the inspecting officer along with Sergeant Major Power.

The NJROTC Unit invites parents, family and friends of the cadets to attend this public event. They extend a special invitation to veterans, members of the Carson City School District, supporting organizations, and staff members who may have a prep period during the ceremony. SPEECH & DEBATE COMPETES

The Carson High School Speech and Debate team had a successful showing at the Carson Valley Middle School tournament last weekend.

Captains Sean Lopez and Julianna Powell both placed in the dramatic interpretation category. In the novice division, Sean received fourth place for his retelling of a Vietnam War veteran's struggles in "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien.

In the senior division, Julianna placed fourth for her piece on the hopes of overcoming the effects of mental retardation in "Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel Keys.

Kier Ferris placed sixth in novice expository in his first tournament appearance for his piece on the ideal government and Luke Szatmary placed third in Student Congress at his first tournament as well.

Next month's tournament will be Nov. 18 and 19 at Reno High School. Debate topics include: "The federal government should substantially increase funding of space exploration," "Do individuals have a moral obligation to assist people in need?" and "Should the electoral college be replaced by the popular vote?"

VOLLEYBALL FUNDRAISER

The CHS volleyball program is doing a "Dining to Donate" fundraiser 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Carson City Applebee's Restaurant. During that time, 15 percent of all proceeds from customers who bring in a flier will be donated to the CHS volleyball program.

NHS BLOOD DRIVE SUCCESS

National Honor Society sponsored a blood drive on Oct. 13 with United Blood Services. It was a big success.

We collected 189 pints of blood. Thank you to all the students and all the community members who supported such a worthy cause. CHS NHS is off to a great start for the UBS High School Challenge competition. Last year CHS won the challenge among Northern Nevada schools and received a $3,000 grant..

HOSA WEEK

HOSA week is coming up Nov. 7-11, which is celebrated across the country by students interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. The week is focused on informing the public about health related issues and raising money for worthy organizations.

CHS HOSA students will be holding a spaghetti feed 5:30-6:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at CHS upper cafeteria.

Tickets are being pre-sold for $5 from HOSA members or contact carsonhosa@gmail.com to purchase one. All proceeds are going to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

WINTER SPORTS

A reminder that winter sports sign-ups will be Tuesday in the north foyer from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.. For more information, contact the athletic office at 283-1900.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week's senior spotlight is on Omar Garcia. Omar has a grade-point average of 3.6. In addition, Omar is on the boys' soccer team, he volunteers at United Latino Community Center, and at his church. Next year, Omar plans to major in agriculture and is considering attending attend MIT, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, or UNR. CHS is proud of Omar and his contributions and dedication to our school.
