The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.
SILVER DOLLAR: Carson City Sheriff's Deputy Bob Motamenpour, who administered CPR and revived a 1-year-old boy whose mother found him submerged in 7 inches of water in the bathtub. Reflecting later on his actions, Motamenpour humbly stated, "I didn't know I had it in me." Now we all know.
WOODEN NICKEL: President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner for their petty brinksmanship over the scheduling of Obama's address to the nation, now set for Sept. 8. The president will speak about jobs.
SILVER DOLLAR: Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare for its $80,000 grant to Western Nevada College's nursing program. The money will allow the college to hire another nursing instructor and accept eight more students into the two-year program.
SILVER DOLLAR: The Carson City Board of Supervisors, for providing $12,000 so the quirky Ghost Walk attraction can go on. Mary Bennett has taken over the event, scheduled for Oct. 22, from the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau, which is helping with Bennett's transition. It's nice to see the Ghost Walk foster this spirit of cooperation.
