TENNIS: Tigers turn back Carson 13-5

MINDEN - Douglas' Kari TenBroeck was 3-0 on the day leading the Tigers to a 13-5 win over Carson in girls tennis action.

Leading Carson was Emily Collins who posted a 2-1 record. She dropped her first match of the year to TenBroeck, 6-3.

The doubles team of Ellise McGowan and Maddi Saarem also won twice, 6-3 and 6-4. The best match of the day was the doubles match between Carson's Elizabeth Flansberg and Stephanie Gansberg defeated Douglas' Demi Cole and Megan Filbin 7-6 and 15-13 in the tiebreak. The Carson team rallied from a 5-2 deficit.

Douglas is 4-0 on the year. Carson is 2-3 and hosts Wooster on Thursday.

Carson boys beat DHS

Blake Sly won three singles matches and the doubles team of Mathew Boggs and Casey Reid won three times in doubles to lead Carson to a 12-6 win over rival Douglas.

Sly dropped just two games in his three sets, while Boggs and Reid lost eight games in their three wins.

Peter Brinson went 2-1 in singles, while Nick Forbes and Josh Breen went 2-1 in doubles.

GOLF

Carson wins home tourney

The Carson girls golf team had a strong match Tuesday at the Eagle Valley East Golf Course. The Senators won the meet with a score of 339. Manogue was second at 347, Galena was third at 363 and Douglas was fourth at 368.

After a 1-under front side, Carson's Megan Justice had a few hiccups on the back but still shot a 77 good enough for third place, one shot back.

Ali Vondrak carded an 85, good enough for sixth place. Heather Evans fired an 86 (seventh place), Kristen Good (91) came in ninth. Kahlia Wahpepah and Ashley Andreas shot a non-scoring 99 and 104 respectively.

"I am really happy," coach Jeff Rispin said. "I challenged them (after a pair of third place finishes) and they really responded."

Carson plays at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Wolf Run.

VOLLEYBALL

Yerington sweeps

Yerington rolled to a workmanlike 25-11, 25-10 and 25-10 victory at Incline Tuesday night. Leading the Lions was Makenna Lommori with eight kills, Kelsey Soukup with six kills and Chloe Dane with five. Brooke Aiazzi had six digs and Savena Rogers added five digs. Cierra Gamez led the team with five kills while Amber Veil and Aiazzi both added two. Lommori added 11 assists and Rogers added six.

Yerington is 16-3 and plays at home Friday against Battle Mountain.

CROSS COUNTRY

Carson girls, Sierra Lutheran boys fare well

The Carson High girls' cross county team had a strong showing at the University of Nevada/Jim VandenHeuvel Twilight Invitational on Saturday. Carson finished second behind Boise High School one of the top teams in Idaho.

April Shonnard paced Carson running the 4K course in 15:22. Alex Drozdoff was 11th in 16:22, Cindy Juchtzer was 13th in 16:28, Mallory Wilson was 22nd at 16:58, Erika Sosa was 26th in 17:15, Chelsea Gordon 46th in 18:02 and Avery Hudak 53rd at 18:25.

"The team ran really well," coach Pete Sinnott. "We are getting stronger and are focused on the bigger upcoming meets."

On the boys' side, a slow start hurt the Senators as they were never able to fully recover. Carson was 9th out of 10 teams.

Leading the team was Michael Shonnard in 18th at 14:07. Nicholas Greene was 28th in 14:31, Chris Merriner was 55th in 15:26, Tylar Chester was 59th in 15:41 and Daniel Jauregui was 67th in 15:55.

Carson runs again Saturday at Nevada Union.

Sierra Lutheran senior Nathanael Williams took second, running the 4K race in 13:11. Reno's Jordan Cardenas won the race with a time of 12:49.

The annual race is run under the lights at Shadow Mountain Park in Sparks.

Sierra Lutheran was seventh as a team in the boys' varsity race, and the top 2A finisher, posting a team time of 1:14.12.

John McRae was 45th with a time of 15:02, Donovan Harrison finished 47th in 15:09, Luke Barulich was 48th in 15:10. Jonny Harms finished 56th in 15:38 and Wyatt Hicks was 73rd in 16:30.

Becky Grabow took eighth in the girls' race, running the 4K course in 16:01.

"Becky and Nathanael ran as I expected," coach Dave Marson said. "They are setting themselves up nicely for colleges that are looking for runners. I was happy in the progress made from last week. Everyone dropped time."

SOCCER

Incline stops Dayton girls

Incline bolted to a 6-1 halftime lead an ended up on the right side of a 7-1 win over the visiting Dust Devils.

Devon Cates scored Dayton's lone goal in the waning moments of the first half.

Dayton stopper Savannah Parsons missed the game with an injury and Serena Pistilli couldn't finish the game because of bruised ribs.

"That had an effect on us," Dayton coach Jared Micklich said. "Their forwards are faster than our defense. W didn't do a good job of cutting down the angles on them in the first half. We did a better job in the second half."

Dayton visits South Tahoe on Thursday.

Carson JV girls lose

Carson, despite solid play from Danielle Sandage, dropped a 2-0 decision to Douglas.
