NV Energy gives $773K in community grants

The NV Energy Foundation contributed more than $773,000 to 45 organizations statewide, including multi-year commitments, during the third quarter of 2011.

Grants were given to 24 Northern Nevada organizations including the American Red Cross, Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada, United Way of Northern Nevada, Carson Valley Trails Association, Children's Museum of Northern Nevada and C*A*R*E* Chest of Sierra Nevada.

Each quarter, the NV Energy Foundation contributes funds to help local nonprofit organizations. Grants are focused on five philanthropic areas: education, the environment, youth development, arts and multi-cultural outreach and health and human services.

Resume workshop for job-seekers

Carson City Library will sponsor a resume building workshop at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

This workshop is open to anyone looking for a new job, anyone seeking to change jobs, and especially to those having a difficult time finding a job.

This workshop will include the seven key principles to create an effective resume; how to make your resume stand out; how to use your resume to get a job in any job market; what employers look for when reviewing your resume; and the resources available through the Carson City Library that will help fine tune your resume.

The instructor, Vishnu Subramaniam, has reviewed and critiqued hundreds of resumes and hired employees in the private and non-profit sectors.

Professionals sought for Rotary exchange program

Rotarians of Rotary District 5190 serving Northern Nevada and Northern California are seeking four outstanding professionals to visit Sao Paulo State, Brazil from April 28 through May 28 as part of the Group Study Exchange program of The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

For four to five weeks, team members experience the way of life, customs, and vocational practices of another country, while sharing information about their homeland.

If selected, team members will be expected to attend three all-day training and orientation sessions in the Reno-Tahoe area in the four months prior to their departure for Brazil. The training sessions are normally conducted on Saturdays.

The Group Study Exchange program promotes international understanding and goodwill through personal connection. While abroad, team members stay in Rotarians' homes and have the opportunity to meet their professional counterparts. They also give presentations to Rotary clubs and other groups about their home country.

The Rotary Foundation pays for round-trip airfare, and Rotary club members in the host country provide meals, lodging, and group travel in their district. Team members pay for personal and incidental expenses.

Young adults between the ages of 25 and 40 who are interested in applying should be employed full-time in a business or profession. Applicants must live or be employed in Rotary District 5190.

Workforce job fair offers opportunity to find employment

With unemployment in Carson City over 12 percent, many area residents are looking for work. The Carson City Human Services Workforce Development Program is ready to give them a hand by organizing and sponsoring a job fair 1:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Carson City Senior Center.

The job fair is open to any local resident who wants to meet with prospective employers. Job fairs are a great opportunity for people who are unemployed to meet with many employers who are hiring, all in one place. Anyone who wishes to participate should bring several copies of their resume and be ready to talk to hiring managers from participating companies.

Some of the employers who will be attending the job fair include: A.2.Z Staffing, LLC; Adecco; Advanced Home Health; Aerotek; Fusion Salon; Kelly Services; Right at Home; Spherion; and the U.S. Army. Any other employers who wish to take part should contact the Workforce Development Office to reserve a table.

For those who may require a bit more help to enter the job market, the Workforce Development Program has a Case Manager who is willing to assist with writing a resume, searching for jobs, and setting individual employment goals. Their office, located in the Health and Human Services building at 900 E. Long Street, strives to place workers in jobs that are well-suited to their interests and skills. Anyone can make an appointment to receive advice on searching for jobs.

Business continuity and disaster recovery workshop slated

Washoe County Emergency Management is hosting a one-day workshop for Northern Nevada businesses on Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Planning. These workshops are scheduled for Oct. 4-5 at the Gold Dust West Casino Hotel.

"The purpose of this workshop is to allow businesses an opportunity to attend an interactive, informative, hands-on workshop that addresses all aspects of planning for continuing their business operations in the event of an emergency or disaster," stated Aaron Kenneston, Washoe County emergency manager. "Workshop participants will learn the skills necessary to develop and implement effective business continuity and IT disaster recovery plans and programs within their own organizations and will come away with a better understanding of what elements need to be considered for their businesses to be up and running in a short amount of time."

The same workshop will be presented on both days, so business owners and companies can attend either day or they may attend both days if they wish to send their staff for the training. The workshops will be held from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4 and Wednesday, Oct. 5. Seating is limited so early registration is recommended.
