PREP ROUNDUP: Split decision for Carson cross-country teams

WASHOE VALLEY - Carson High's girls cross country team swept past Galena 15-40 in a dual cross-country meet at Washoe State Park Tuesday afternoon.

On the boys side, Galena won 19-30.

The girls were led once again by April Shonnard, who covered the 3.05-mile course in 20:15.7. Alex Drozdoff was second (21:45.3), Cindy Juchtzer was third (21:45.3), Mallory Wilson fourth (22:24.0) and Erika Sosa fifth (22:41.4).

"That was a really good time for April," said coach Pete Sinnott. "You have to run small trails, on sand and in the water for about 50 yards."

Michael Shonnard was the top finisher for the Carson boys, taking fifth overall and fourth for dual-meet scoring purposes. He finished in 18:21.63. Taylor Bradshaw was the second Carson finisher in 18:52.70, while Nick Greene was the third scorer for Carson at 19:44.97. Chris Merriner (20:23.33) and Danny Jauregui was the final scorer for the Senators (20:49.76).

Carson heads to the Stanford Invitational on Saturday.

Sierra Lutheran solid at North Tahoe

The Sierra Lutheran Cross Country team had a good day for running on Friday at North Tahoe High School in California.

The girls' team was led by Becky Grabow who came in fourth place (24.35). Erin Henry was 45th with a time of 27:54, Sierra Stulac was 70th with a time of 30:32, Abby Williams was 104th with a time of 34:18 and Alesha Martinez was 106th with a time of 34:46.

The boys' team ran well capturing third place as a team. Nathanael Williams was first with a time of 19:52, Luke Barulich was 26th with a time of 23:05, Donovan Harrison was 27th with a time of 23:08, John McRae was 34th with a time of 23:39, Jonny Harms was 50th with a time of 24:08 and Wyatt Hicks was 123rd with time of 26:52.

Douglas girls stay undefeated

MINDEN - The Douglas girls' soccer team moved to 11-0 overall and 6-0 in Northern 4A play with a 4-1 win over Bishop Manogue on Tuesday.

Shannon Prinz blasted a roller past Manogue's keeper in the 20th minute to give Douglas the early 1-0 lead.

The Tigers extended it to 2-0 on a goal from Katie Dry in the 32nd minute. Douglas outshot Manogue 13-2 in the first half.

The Miners cut the lead in half early in the second half, getting a goal in the 46th minute, and peppered the Tiger net with five shots before Douglas could answer back.

Lexie Weaver got Douglas back in business in the 55th minute, scoring on a long run sparked by a pass from Lexi VonSchottenstein.

Tia Lyons drew within one goal of tying the school's career record (56), scoring in the 77th minute on a nice cross from Holly Downer to cap the scoring in the game.

Carson JV girls blank Wooster

Josie Veneziano scored a hat trick and Danielle Sandage added a goal and two assists to lead the Senators to a 5-0 win over Wooster.

Paola Cervera, an exchange student from Mexico, also scored a goal. Arlette Mariscal, Jenna Buonacorsi, Mariah Olivera and Teresa Boehmer played well on defense as did Carly Bachmann.

VOLLEYBALL

Carson sweeps N. Valleys

RENO - Carson High's volleyball tam made it three straight wins in Northern 4A play with a 25-19, 25-18 and 25-20 win over North Valleys.

Micaela Vowinkel led the hitters with five kills and Christa McGahuey added three. Tiana McAllister-Daggs had nine blocks for the Senators.

"Our kill totals weren't very high," said coach Robert Maw. "We've been trying some new combinations. This is the second straight match she has played really well."

Carson played without Alyson Christl, who was ill.

Carson hosts Wooster Thursday at 6 p.m.

Yerington sweeps Dayton

YERINGTON - Yerington swept Dayton in varsity volleyball action Tuesday night (25-14, 25-12, 25-19).

Yerington was led by Makenna Lommori with 20 kills, 16 assists and eight digs. Brooke Aiazzi added 11 kills and 17 digs. Savena Rogers added 12 assists and Amber Veil added seven digs.

Leading Dayton was Madison Foley with 13 kills, three blocks, two digs and an ace and Cora Jeffers with 11 assists, a kill and seven digs.

Yerington, 18-3, hosts Whittell on Thursday.

Dayton, 4-1, hosts South Tahoe Friday night before hosting Whittell on Saturday.

TENNIS

Carson falls South Tahoe

Emily Collins bounced back from a opening round loss in a tie break to win her other two matches on Tuesday, however it wasn't enough as Carson fell to South Tahoe, 12-6.

Katy Breeding also won two matches in singles action. Analiza Ong went 1-2. Maddi Saarem and Ellise McGowan went 1-2 in doubles action. In exhibition play, Lydia Carel and Manon Hustinx won two matches.

Carson, 2-5, play at Incline on Thursday.

Carson boys fall 11-7 to Vikings

LAKE TAHOE - Blake Sly, Ben Drozdoff and Peter Brinson accounted for all of Carson's points in an 11-7 setback to South Tahoe.

Sly lost just one game in three sets. Brinson won his first set 6-1 and then came back from a 5-0 deficit to win his third-round match 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker). Drozdoff won his first two matches before losing in the third round.
