PREPS: Carson girls finish 4th at Stanford

STANFORD - Carson High's girls cross-country team, led by April Shonnard and Alex Drozdoff, finished fourth at Saturday's Stanford Invitational.

The Carson boys took 13th in their division, taking nearly two minutes off their team time.

Shonnard covered the 3.1-mile course at the Stanford Golf Course in 18:20 to take second place. Drozdoff was ninth in 18:51. It was the first time both runners have cracked the 19-minute mark, according to Carson coach Pete Sinnott.

Cindy Juchtzer finished 25th in 19:45, Mallory Wilson was 75th in 20:43, Erika Sosa was 81st in 20:47 and Chelsea Gordon was 127th in 21:50.

Shonnard was in 15th place after the first mile, but one by one started picking off the runners ahead of her.

"She (Shonnard) ran a real good race," Sinnott said. "She is getting stronger."

Sinnott was downright giddy about the improvement by his boys team. He said they are closing the gap on Reno and Galena.

Taylor Bradshaw finished 29th in 16:36, while Michael Shonnard was 34th in 16:39. Nick Greene finished 57th in 17 minutes, Chris Merriner was 105th in 17:40 and Dominic Kinder was 136th in 18:11.

"All of the boys had personal bests," Sinnott said. "Some were 10 seconds and some by more than a minute."

Carson runs against Douglas on Tuesday afternoon.

Lopez leads Carson boys

RENO - Johny Lopez scored two goals to lead Carson High's boys soccer team to a 6-0 win over Bishop Manogue in a Sierra League match Saturday afternoon.

The win upped Carson's record to 5-1-1 heading into Wednesday night's home match against McQueen.

"We played well," Carson coach Eric Masters said. "We definitely did enough to win the game. We didn't make any mistakes defensively. The guys want to keep this up.

"We took care of our opportunities. We could have done more in the first half. We had to adjust to their small field. It doesn't cater to the style we play. We talked at halftime and went out and scored four goals."

Jason Martinez and Lopez scored in the first half. Lopez's first goal came after Sam Hutchinson was fouled in the penalty box, and Lopez knocked in the ensuing penalty kick to make it 2-0 which is how the first half ended.

Lopez made it 3-0 with his second goal, and then Evan Sanchez, Jorge Rodriguez and Jon Guevara added goals to complete the scoring.

Manogue managed just five shots on goal, a testament to the play of defenders Michael Samii, Zach Bruce, Miguel Ortiz and Adam Shoaf. Ortiz and Shoaf played because of injuries to Zach Smith and Christian Navarro.

Manogue girls edge Carson 2-1

RENO - Gabby Rainoldi broke a 1-1 tie in the 68th minute to give the Miners a win over Carson in a Sierra League battle Saturday afternoon.

Carson's Kaitlyn Holmes gave the Senators a 1-0 first-half lead, and the Miners' Ashley Sambrailo evened the game in the second half.

Manogue out-shot Carson 19-9. Emmy Heller had nine saves for Carson, while Wynn Allen and Aiden Vasquez combined for nine saves for Manogue.

Carson is now 5-2, while Manogue is 4-2-1.

Whittell girls edge Dayton 2-1

DAYTON - Whittell scored in the 60th minute to snap a 1-all tie and edge Dayton 2-1 in a Northern 3A/2A soccer match.

Devon Cates scored Dayton's only goal off an assist by Maribel Ledezma.

Coach Jared Miklich praised the play of Ledezma, Cates, goalie Muranda Fowler and forward-midfielder Erika McCoy.

"We had our opportunities," Miklich said. "We just couldn't find the net. We had a couple of free kicks that we missed the mark on. The opportunities were there.

Dayton girls lose in 5

DAYTON - The Dust Devils fought back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the match before falling 15-12 in the decisive fifth game to Whittell.

Whittell won the first two games 25-15 and 25-20 only to see Dayton bounce back for a 26-24 win in Game 3 and a 25-21 win in Game 4.

Dayton visits Truckee, the team it lost to in the 3A state finals last year Tuesday at 6 p.m. On Wednesday, Dayton celebrates homecoming with a home match against Silver Stage at 6 p.m.

"Collectively we did a good job," Dayton coach Monica Halverson said. "It was a really good match. Erin (Edison) did a fantastic job (17 kills, 9 blocks). Madison struggled a bit the first two games, bout bounced back and put up good numbers (18 kills, 3 blocks, 4 digs)."

Cora Jeffreys finished with 30 kills and seven assists. Cassie DePew had a kill and four blocks, while Ashley Vickers contributed four kills and two digs.
