Harvest Festival includes includes unique activities

Full Circle Compost and Hungry Mother Organics will host an Autumn Harvest Festival 10 a.m.-3 p.m. today at the retail site, 3190 Hwy 395, just south of Carson City across for Silver City RV.

Besides harvest festivities, the event includes a mini farmers market, workshops, local vendors, live music by Hick'ry Switch, and hands-on activities such as making corn stalk bouquets, scarecrow building, and pumpkin painting.

There will also be a "Heirloom Tomato Tasting" contest with more than 50 varieties of locally grown tomatoes.

Workshops are:

10-11:15 a.m. - Arbor Care of Tahoe on "Winterizing trees and shrubs and pruning made easy."

Noon-12:45 p.m. - Full Circle Compost on "Putting your bed to rest winterizing yoru garden and seen saving."

1:30-2:15 p.m. - Hungry Mother Organics on "The how to's of winter gardening: winter crops, row cover and hoops houses, and winter cover crops."

Aromatherapy used in the treatment of Alzheimer's

Carson City Library will host Lane Simonian at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Simonian will talk about the use of aromatherapy to treat Alzheimer's disease. He will provide findings from animal studies, clinical trials and case studies which indicate the compounds in several essential oils have shown to help partially reverse the disease.

Simonian is a history instructor at Western Nevada College. He has spent the past seven years researching Alzheimer's disease in order to try to help relatives and others with the disease. He and his sisters have used aromatherapy for the past four years to improve the quality of life for their mother.

Democratic Women's meeting planned

The Carson City Democratic Women's Club will meet Oct. 8 at Grandma Hattie's Restaurant. Lunch may be ordered off the menu at 11:30 a.m. and the program begins at noon.

Featured presenter will be Brenda Silis of the Capital City Circles Program. She will introduce a family who has worked their way out of poverty.

Progress on the Nevada Day Float and preparation for the February caucus will also be discussed.

State nursery in Washoe Valley offers 25-percent-off sale

The Nevada Division of Forestry State Tree Nursery in Washoe Valley is holding a 25-percent-off sale of low-cost, conservation plants.

The nursery will sell its remaining stock at the discounted price Oct. 14 and 15. The nursery is closing for the season Oct. 15 and will re-open May 10.

Fall is an optimum time for planting. Warm soils encourage root growth before the ground freezes. Fall plantings with an already established root system will be more tolerant of the summer heat.

The nursery will be open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. Plants are available on a first-come, first-served basis. For a list of available species, call the nursery at 775-849-0213 or visit http://www.forestry.nv.gov.

Most species are available in D-pots for the sale price of $1.69 or T-pots for $2.63.

The nursery is designed to assist landowners by providing plant material suitable for conservation uses such as, but not limited to, windbreaks, soil erosion control, water conservation and wildlife habitats. Plants purchased at the Washoe Nursery must be used for conservation purposes as provided for by NRS 528.105.

The plants are all grown and maintained at the nursery and are conditioned to survive Northern Nevada's cold winters and hot summers.
