Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels: Silver to wild horse and burro program

The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the U.S. Interior Department for its Wild Horse and Burro Program, under which prisoners at the Northern Nevada Correctional Facility rehabilitate and train the animals for adoption. WOODEN NICKEL: To the gunman who shot and killed a Hells Angels boss last weekend in Sparks during the Street Vibrations festival. It's too bad the area is so dependent on the tourism dollars from this event - otherwise, the decision to permanently pull the plug on it would be an easy one.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Kiwanis of Sierra Nevada for this weekend's road cleanup project in Genoa in the aftermath of the Candy Dance event. Service clubs like this are often overlooked or taken for granted. Their efforts enhance the quality of life for all.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Ariz., for speaking last week in Carson City to local Republican groups in the face of protests led by a Reno clergyman. Like him or not, you always know where Sheriff Joe stands on issues of law and order.
