PREPS: Carson girls lose twice to Reed

SPARKS - Despite solid pitching outings from Christa McGahuey and Lindsey Ashbaugh, Carson's softball team dropped a doubleheader to Reed, 2-0 and 6-3, Saturday afternoon.

Carson dropped to 9-5 on the season.

In the opener, McGahuey threw a 3-hitter and struck out four but got no help offensively. Reed pushed across a frun in the fifth and a run in th sixth.

Carson got hits from McGahuey, Emily Collins and Danielle Morrow.

The Senators threatened in the seventh when McGahuey soubled and reached third on a passed ball. Morrow struck out and Jen Purcell flied to center to end the threat and the game.

In the second game, Reed used three Carson errors to grab a 4-1 lead after the first inning. Morrow's acrifice drove in Carson's first run.

The Senators cut it to 4-3 in the third when Collins and Purcell singled and Morrow doubled home both runners.

The Raiders scored twice in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and error.

Collins led Carson with two hits in the nightcap.

Carson hosts Spanish Springs next Saturday.

Damonte sweeps Douglas

RENO - Douglas fell to 3-10 overall and 2-6 in 4A play after losing 14-1 and 9-4 to league-leading Damonte Ranch on Saturday.

In the opener, Damonte took control with nine firt-inning run , seven of which were earned. The Mustangs hit three triples in the inning, including a two-run blow by Meghan Hospodka.

Douglas' only run came in the second when Jenna Geyer hit a solo homer. The Tigers managed just five hits.

Damonte got off to a quick start in the second game, scoring two in the first, three in the second and one in the third en route to a 6-1 lead.

Leona Mortimer doubled home a run in the first, but the Mustangs took the lad in the bottom of the inning on a two-run error. Chanel Bates' triple keyed a two-run surge in the second, an error allowed a run to score in the third.

Douglas scored three in the seventh, one earned, to complete the scoring. Aaliyah Paxson singled home a run in the seventh.

Mortimer and McKinnon doubled for the Tigers, while Kelly Sonnemann tripled.

Dayton blasts Sparks

FALLON - Dayton rolled to an easy 24-8 win over Sparks in a Northern 3A crossover game on Saturday.

Dayton was cheduled to play Truckee, but that game was postponed because of weather.

The Dust Devils scored seven in the first and 12 in the second. The game was stopped after five innings on the mercy rule.

Kelly Combs went 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBI. Kalee Alexander and Makayla Shadle each went 3-for-4. Alexander scored twice and drove in three runs, while Shadle scored three times and drove in oner. Michaela Hoff went 2-for-5 with four RBI.

BASEBALL

Douglas hammers Wooster

MINDEN - The Douglas baseball team outslugged Wooster 15-7 Saturday afternoon, bolstered by a standout effort from Cody Begovich at the plate.

Begovich went 4-for-5 with six RBIs, two doubles, a triple and three runs scored to lead the Tigers.

Leo Trebotich went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Dillon Lopez went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Dusty Fisher went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and Nolan Weintz and Chase White each drove in a run in the win.

Douglas piled up a five-run lead in the first and never looked back, although Wooster had three runs in the secon and four in the fourth to keep the game from ending via the 10-run mercy rule.

Jackson Ketron started the game on the mound for the Tigers, striking out two and walking none, but sophomore Kyle Johnson picked up the win in relief for the second Saturday in a row, striking out two of his own over 3.1 innings of work.

Douglas improved to 9-4 overall and 3-4 in Northern 4A action.

JV BASEBALL

Carson defeats Damonte 8-7

Brandon Allen pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts, while Nevin Elliott drove in the go-ahead runs in the sixth with a two-run homer.

Ronnie Orzalli and Kyle Kunz had two RBI each for the Senators.

TRACK

Carson frosh-soph 6th at Reed

SPARKS - Carson High's frosh-soph track team finished sixth at the Reed-Sparks Rotary Invitational on Saturday.

McQueen won the meet with 134, while Carson managed 60. The CHS varsity girls had a rough day, finishing 21st with seven points.

The Carson frosh-soph boys placed sixth in the 400 relay (50.36), won the 800 relay (1:43.45) and was third in the 1600 relay (4:01.33).

Individually, Aaron Woodbury was second in the long jump (17-0) and the triple jump (37-0). Jesse Knight was third in the shot at 41-2 and third in the discus at 104-3.

Makayala Ragnone was sixth in the shot put (32-8) and Tiana McAllisseventhter-Daggs was eighth at 31-10 1/4. Erika Valenzuela was sixth in the discus at 93-2.

Douglas' Nick Maestretti won the pole vault at 13-6, while his female counterpart at DHS, Amanda Brazeau, won the girls pole vault with a mark of 10 feet. Lindsey Adams was second in the 3200 at 12:12.72. The Douglas girls won the 1600 relay in 4:29.57 and the 3200 relay in 10:01.64. Sierra Lutheran standout Nathaneal Williams was second to Reno's Jordan Cardenas in the 3200 (10:00.9) and third in the 1600 (4:55.7) behind Elko's Connor Wolf and Reed's Cody Forman. Sierra Lutheran was 12th in boys and 14th in girls.

Sierra Lutheran's Conner Love was eighth in the 300 hurdles at 44.66. Alex Borgamn of Sierra Lutheran threw 136-10 for fifth in the discus while Becky Grabow was fifth in the 1600 at 5:45.3.

Dayton's Tylor Bard won the high jump with a mark of 6-2 while teammate Cameron McGifford was fifth in the 300 hurdles at 44.10, while Katrina Breithaupt was sixth in the 800 (2:34.7) and sixth in the 1600 (5:49.9). Madison Foley was fourth in the high jump at 4-10 and 10th in the triple jump (32-2).

Dayton girls win at Yerington

YERINGTON - The Dayton High girls won the small-school girls track meet on Saturday and the boys placed second.

Dayton outscored Yerington 178-100 on the girls side, while ROP outscored Dayton 165-163 on the boys side.

Lettie Lynch won the 100 (13.61) and 200 (29.10) , and finished second in the 400 (1:08.27). Alyse Fletcher won the long jump (14-4 1/2) and took third in the triple jump (28-10). Ashley Vickers was second in the long jump (14-4) and second in the triple jump (29-5). D.J. Ply won the high jump at 8 feet. Kaylee Turner was second in the shot put (31-2 1/2) and third in the discus (103-4). Vickers was third in the 100 (14.32).

Joshua Koch won the shot put (42-11) and the discus (130-9), while Cameron McGifford won the 110 hurdles in 17.48. Andrew Goodman was second in the 400 (58.59), Ethan Galloway was third in the 1600 (5:13.02), Aaron Elissa was third in the 800 (2:20.55) and sixth in the 1600 (5:198.16) and Paul Kurashewich won the pole vault (8-6).

SWIMMING

Carson boys, girls sweep McQueen and Reno

The Carson swim teams celebrated a big day by beating both Reno and McQueen on Saturday.

The boys beat McQueen 166-89 and Reno 138-122. The girls beat McQueen 143-133 and Reno 143-117.

Tim Grunert won the 200 IM in 2:17.96 and the 100 breast in 1:07.06. He also swam a leg on the econd-place 200 medley relay team and th 200 free relay squad. Cory Gentner was second in the 50 free in 27.08 and third in the 100 back in 1:10.73. He also swam on the two aforementioned relay squads. Zachary White won the 100 free in 54.42 and was second in the 200 IM in 2:22.34 while swiming in two relay events. Gary Showalter was second in the 100 breast in 1:08.06 and third in the 100 fly in 1:06.35.

Sophie Holmes won the 100 free in 1:00.01, placed second in the 200 IM in 2:33.13 and swam on the 200 free relay which took first. Eli Everest won the 100 back in 1:09.57 and was second in the 200 free in 2:09.24. She also swam on the medley (second) and free relay team (second). Erin Chang took thirds in the 100 fly in 1:16.67 and the 50 free in 27.94. She also swam on the aforementioned relay squads. Danielle tanka was second in the 500 freestyle in 5:57.82, while Charlee Bradley was second in teh 100 breast in 1:22.00. Stanka swam on the free relay squad.
