SPARKS - It took a while to get there, but the Douglas High baseball team returned from Spanish Springs with a 3-0 win Thursday night.

That came following an hour-long snow delay and a four-hour trip due to the team bus breaking down.

Douglas led 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth before a heavy snow storm settled over the Spanish Springs field. After the delay, umpires called the game. The scorebook reverted to the last completed inning, the fifth, after which Douglas led 3-0.

"A win is a win, we'll take it," Douglas coach Bruce Jacobsen said. "It got pretty nasty in a hurry. The snow started sticking and that was pretty much it. It was good for the kids to bounce back after Tuesday. That was a game we didn't play very well. What they did today says a lot about the kids.

"We just have to settle into a consistent, day-in, day-out approach."

Sophomore Kyle Johnson picked up in the win in his first league start.

"He threw well," Jacobsen said. "Spanish Springs is a good team. They are senior laden and they have a lot of power. He was able to get ahead and do well against their hitters."

Senior Cody Begovich stayed on a tear, hitting a first-inning solo home run for his 16th RBI in three games.

Freshman Kaleb Foster went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Matt Santos was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Jacobsen said he was particularly pleased with Douglas' defensive play, noting left fielder Dusty Fisher specifically.

"Dusty bailed us out twice," Jacobsen said. "He had a diving play down the line in the second that saved a run, and then in the fifth they had the bases loaded with one and he made another diving catch and doubled the guy up at second to get us out of the inning."

Spanish Springs got a leadoff home run to start the sixth and then put a runner on first with one out before the snow rolled in.

The two teams meet up again in Minden on Saturday.
