WNC sweeps two from Eastern Utah

PRICE, Utah - Western Nevada College's baseball team returned to its winning ways by sweeping a doubleheader from the College of Eastern Utah, 12-4 and 11-2, Thursday afternoon in Scenic West Athletic Conference action.

The second game was stopped after six innings because of rain. The first game was delayed by 1-hour 50 minutes.

WNC improved to 20-5. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader today starting at 11 a.m. weather permitting.

The Wildcats collected 21 hits in the doubleheader. Derrick Pitts went 5-for-9 with five RBI, while Zach Hendrix went 4-for-8 with four RBI.

"We came out with the you can't stop us mentality," said WNC coach D.J. Whittemore. "It was good to see."

In the opener, WNC scored one in the second and exploded for six in the third. WNC added one in the fifth, two in the sixth and two in the seventh. Pitts went 3-for-5 and drove in two runs, while Hendrix drove in three runs as did Alex Schmidt. Neil Lawhorn slugged a solo homer.

Andrew Woeck worked the first three, striking out two and walking one. He didn't allow a hit or run. He was followed by Tyler Spencer, Brandon Show and Matt Robertson.

"Andrew threw well," Whittemore said. "That rain delay.. that was tough on him."

The second game was decided early when the Wildcats scored six in the second and five in the third for an 11-2 lead after three.

Dylan Baker worked the first three, striking out eight and walking four. He allowed two runs on just one hit. Eastern Utah had just one hit the entire game, the third 1-hitter by WNC in its last four games. Evan Parker worked a scoreless fourth and Rayne Raven struck out five in two innings of work.

Pitts drove in three runs and had a homer, Taylor Smart drove in three and AJ Hernandez batted in two. Smart, Hendrix, Pits and Hernandez all had two hits.

Whittemore wasn't sure if today's games would be played.

"It will all come down to whether they want to put the work in to get the field ready," Whittemore said. "Eastern Utah put a lot of hard work to get thing ready today."
