The Carson City Sheriff's Office is hosting the 10th annual National Night Out from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Mills Park.
The National Night Out Crime, Drug and Violence Prevention event brings residents and law enforcement together to help raise awareness and reduce crime in the community.
Since its beginning, the Carson City event has received national awards for its National Night Out efforts.
"It is critical to come together as one community after the tragedies of the past year," said Lisa Davis, Carson City D.A.R.E. Officer and event organizer, referring to the IHOP shooting and other events. "People can come out and meet those that serve every day. This is where people can learn officers' names, learn how to reduce crime, keep themselves safe and reduce the risk of becoming a victim."
The agenda includes food, interactive activities and equipment displays. The "Safe Summer Nights" themed event will feature Rep. Mark Amodei. He will present crime prevention awards from the offices of Sens. Dean Heller and Harry Reid and Gov. Brian Sandoval.
The event will feature representatives from public health agencies, youth organizations, local businesses, faith-based services, first responders, local law enforcement and the military. A Black Hawk military helicopter and a CareFlight medical helicopter also will be on hand.
A new addition at this year's event will be the Crime Free Multi-Housing project, a program that emphasizes the collaboration of local police and apartment managers to reduce crime at housing complexes.
The event is sponsored by local businesses and members of the community. Additional costs are paid for through a federal grant and by the Carson City Sheriff's Office.
"I am deeply honored by the public response," Davis said. "The community has breathed life into it. This year, people have come out in droves to help. That says a lot about where we live."
