SPARKS - Carson High football coach Blair Roman wasn't displeased with his team's performance in Saturday's scrimmage against Spanish Springs, but he wasn't jumping for joy, either.
Carson's offense failed to score in its eight offensive possessions with Garrett Schafer and Austin Schafer at the helm.
It was somewhat disjointed scrimmage, as teams would start a drive at midfield, and then start the next possession at the opposition's 20 or even closer whether a first down was made or not. Certainly not your normal way of doing things, but Roman said that home teams set the rules for the day in scrimmages.
"I scripted the whole session (and didn't deviate)," Roman said. "On top of that, Spanish Springs played a different defense than it played last year and it took a bit to adjust.
"We didn't have any big negative-yardage plays. We had a couple of small losses and we didn't throw an interception."
Unofficially, Garrett Schafer threw for 44 yards.
"Garrett did fine," Roman said. "He knows what we want to do on offense. Overall, I thought he did pretty well."
Carson started sophomore Colby Brown at fullback, and he broke off a couple of solid runs during his stint with the first team.
"I had him try out for the varsity in the off-season," Roman said. "He's been a pleasant surprise. He showed me he can play at this level."
On defense, the Senators' first-team unit spent a lot of time chasing around Spanish Spring's Hunter Fralick, who is one of the best throwing quarterbacks in Northern Nevada, and maybe even the state. Franklin had one long reception when a receiver got behind Carson's Andrew Gutierrez. The Carson defender did keep him out of the end zone, however.
There was a "no-hit the quarterback" rule, but Roman estimates that Carson may have had two or three sacks.
"It's not like we got a lot of pressure," Roman said. "We're athletic enough to get there. We just have to keep working at it."
Carson starts eight underclassmen on offense, and Roman thought his youngsters played hard and physical.
"As young as we are, I thought we hit," Roman said. "I saw some nice, physical play out there. I feel we're progressing. We have to clean up some mental mistakes as far as our alignments go."
Carson opens its season against Hug at 7 p.m. Friday The freshman and JV teams will scrimmage at 4 p.m. on Friday.
Dayton vs. Yerington
YERINGTON - Jake Turner threw two TD passes, and the Dust Devils' red-zone offense was effective with three touchdowns against the Division 3 Lions.
"We did OK," said second-year head coach Rob Turner. "We ran 35 plays, and we did some good things and bad things out there.
"I think our offense is a little ahead of our defense right now which is to be expected because of our new defense," Turner said. "We kept Jake clean which is good. I think they got to him one time. I was pleased with the play of the line.
"Defensively, we are where I thought we would be at this point. There is still stuff we're not doing right. We didn't tackle well today."
