The attempt to create political discord in Ormsby County, although made with a bitter and sinister purpose, has been of substantial benefit to the party. Nothing better than to have a man of obnoxious characteristics assume the leadership of the discontented element. It had the effect of sending nine tenths of those who decided to follow strange paths. This ill wind has blown us great good.

100 years ago

This afternoon Railroad Commissioner Shaughnessy is stepping around and so far has only hit the high spots. During the morning Mrs. Shaughnessy presented him with a ten-pound son. As the new boy has three sisters, there's a celebration going on at the Commissioner's headquarters. They are all doing fine, including the Commissioner.

70 years ago

When Brigham Young and the Mormon pioneers entered the Valley of the Great Salt Lake in 1847, there was only one tree in the valley - a mountain cedar. A monument to the tree, now dead and imbedded in concrete, has been erected by a pioneer memorial association.

50 years ago

The summer tourist season saw gaming license applications reach a record high of 1,012. Gaming records show there were some 19,369 slot machines and 1,460 gaming tables in operation during June of this year.

Motorists are in a state of confusion after new traffic signals are installed on Carson Street. Most don't understand they can turn left when the green arrow has disappeared.

Life began anew for 81-year-old Bev Smith when he married his high school sweetheart Jean. They had been apart for 63 years.
