PREPS: Buzzer-beating 3-pointer beats CHS

WINNEMUCCA — Tyson Terlink knocked down a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give Virgin Valley a 50-48 win over Carson in the final day of the Lowry Tournament Saturday morning.Carson, after three straight wins, is now 3-2 heading into its Sierra League game at home Tuesday night against Galena. Both teams are 1-0 in league after wins over Reno.Carson played the game without three players — starter Alan Cohen and reserves Cameron Price and Bruce McIntosh. Cohen was undercut in the first three minutes of the game, and Cohen apparently suffered a concussion in Friday’s loss to Lowry and was still a little wobbly. McIntosh came back to Carson City after Friday’s loss to take the SAT.“It was big not having them,” Carson coach Carlos Mendeguia said. “It definitely affects the rotation when you have three of your top 3-4-5 guys not playing. I moved Rafe (King) to the 4 spot at times. We didn’t have an inside-outside game.“Defensively, I was pretty happy with how we played. They had three really good players. We had scouted them, so we knew where we had to focus.”Still, Carson could have won the game. The Senators led by one with three timeouts left, but didn’t handle the situation well, according to Mendeguia. What upset Mendeguia is that it was seniors who didn’t come through.“We can’t close out games,” Mendeguia said. “It’s frustrating. We have to be able to close out games. Kids have to understand the situation down the stretch.”Matt Nolan led the Senators in scoring with 21, his second consecutive 20-point game. King added 16.VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALLDAYTON LOSES TWICEWINNEMUCCA — Dayton fell to 0-4 on the young season after losing to Fernley, 63-31, and Wooster, 56-44, Saturday at the Lowry Tournament.Fernley led from start to finish in the game between the Division IA rivals, and the Vaqueros held Dayton standout Maribel Ledezma scoreless.“They pressed us for about three-quarters of the game, and we didn’t have an answer for it,” Dayton coach Cliff Serawop said. “There was a big difference between Friday night and this morning.“We started playing as individuals and not as a team, and the girls knew it. I’m glad it happened now instead of the middle of the season. We have to work on it; fix it.”Cheyenne Strong led Dayton with 10, Gemma Ramirez added seven and Taylor Ingersoll finished with six.Dayton led by one with about five minutes to go, but Wooster managed to surge ahead and win the game.Ledezma led Dayton in the second game with 15 points, while Destinee Serawop tallied a season-high 11.
