The Nevada Appeal's Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.SILVER DOLLAR: To the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and other assisting agencies in quickly locating and capturing bank robbers. Sheriff Ken Furlong credited Sandra Delarge for her help in leading officers to the home of the first suspect on Nov. 19. An FBI agent, who had worked a bank robbery in Reno recently, was credited with solving the latest crime. In both instances, teamwork and fast thinking helped keep Carson’s streets safer.SILVER DOLLAR: To the Carson School District for being named a finalist in the Race to the Top competition. Carson is among 61 finalists nationwide chosen from 372 applicants. Winners will receive millions of grant dollars, although that money can’t be used to fill the nearly $6 million budget deficit facing the school district. Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes said the grant money would have to be used for specific re requirements. He said new positions proposed in the grant application could absorb some potential layoffs, however.SILVER DOLLAR: To Bank of America for its $10,000 donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada. That donation is essentially donated thanks to an anonymous donor who pledged to match up to $25,000 in donations by the end of the year. Diane McCoy, director of operations of the club said, “This is such a blessing.” SILVER DOLLAR: To an area group performing “Winter Wonderland” on Dec. 7 and 8 to raise funds for the Dayton Community Center. The show begins at 7 p.m. the first Friday and Saturday of December and admission is $10. All of the “Winter Wonderland” follies’ net proceeds will be donated to Dayton’s center.
