With winter weather moving in, the need for coats is greater than ever. However, the annual coat drive for the Carson City School District’s Children in Transition program is running unusually low this year.“We just have not gotten the turnout we’ve had in the past,” said Director Peggy Sweetland. “Last year, after Black Friday it was like a revolving door. This year, one guy came in.”Sweetland is asking the community to supply jackets, coats and sweatshirts for the nearly 300 children in the program, which serves students living in motels, campgrounds, cars or doubling up with other families.Donations should be new or very gently used, and can be dropped off 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday at the Children in Transition, or McKinney Vento, office in the Gleason Building, 604 W. Musser St. Monetary donations are also accepted.Sizes needed for girls youth include 20 medium, 15 large and five extra large. Boys youth sizes needed are 35 medium, 15 large and five extra large.Call Peggy Sweetland at 775-283-1537 for more information.
