PREP: Douglas girls romp against S. Tahoe

GARDNERVILLE — A certain pattern is beginning to develop for the Douglas High girls basketball team.Suffer through a rocky start, find a rhythm midway through the first quarter and then put on an offensive show, particularly in transition, through the remainder.The Lady Tigers followed the outline to the letter for the second consecutive game Friday night, picking up a 59-35 win over South Tahoe in a nonleague game played at Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School due to the Douglas High Craft Fair being set up in the Tiger gym.“We had some struggles defensively tonight,” Douglas coach Werner Christen said. “We didn’t do a good job on our press break, but we did make some basketball plays. We’re starting to see that with this group, they can execute some plays. We’re doing a good job in the transition game. When we get out in transition, we’re going to be OK.”The Tigers got balanced scoring throughout their lineup. Sophomore Leonna Mortimer put up a team-high 12 points while Desiree Cage and Ericka Munoz each scored 11. McKenna Kynett had eight points and Corryne Millett and Diana Regalado each had six points in the win.South Tahoe built an early 4-0 lead while Douglas struggled to find it’s shot from the floor.“It was almost a carbon copy of the Wooster game (the Tigers missed their first six shots against the Colts on Tuesday),” Christen said. “South Tahoe really made us work for it. They are a scrappy team and they do a good job. We expected that.“We bounced back, though. We’re down 4-0 and then we go on a 13-0 run. The kids responded.”After finishing the first quarter on a 13-0 run for the 13-4 lead, Douglas extended its lead in chunks through the second and third quarters.Cage had a personal 5-0 run early in the second, and the Tigers pieced together two more 5-0 runs and a 6-0 run in the second quarter to carry a 33-17 lead into halftime.The Tigers then outscored South Tahoe 14-4 in the third to effectively put the game away.Douglas improved to 5-2 overall on the year.ELKO 46, CARSON 42RENO — The Indians held off Carson down the stretch to record a narrow win at the Winter Classic at Reno High.Carson dropped to 2-2 on the year. The Senators face Lovelock today at 1:30 at Spanish Springs in their final game of the year.Carson coach Nathan Tolbert had no stats because somebody walked off with the CHS scorebook at the end of the game.“We pressed and they pressed,” Tolbert said. “They’re a little more experienced than we are. It was our game to lose. We played better tonight than we have been. We made a couple of mistakes down the stretch.”VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALLDOUGLAS 78, WEST HIGH 55ELKO — The Douglas boys basketball team opened a tournament with a solid 78-55 win over West High School out of Salt Lake City, Utah.Douglas opened the game on a 10-0 run and fought off West’s feisty full-court pressure to run up its highest scoring total of the young season.The Tigers improved to 3-0 overall on the year and will take on host Elko tonight.ROP 63, DAYTON 54DAYTON — Keytion Jackson hit 7 3-pointers to lead to Rite of Passage over Dayton, 63-54, at the Sutro classic Friday night. Jackson had 32 points, outdueling Dayton’s Austin Fletcher who finished with 30. Coach Jason Santos said the Dust Devils had too many turnovers, forced by ROP’s man-to-man defense.“We were not used to their quickness,” Santos said.Dayton plays at 9 a.m. this morning against Tonopah to conclude round-robin play. The Dust Devils will play a second game, based on seeding, later today.JV BOYS BASKETBALLCarson 63, TRUCKEE 35RENO — Asa Carter scored 17 points and Ian Schulz added 15 to lead the Senators past Truckee at the Damonte Ranch JV tournament. On Thursday, Carson knocked off Spanish Springs, 53-40, behind a 17- point performance by Carter and 15-point night from Robby Miller. Jared Rooker added nine points for the Senators.In the second game, Carson was defeated by Abundant, of St. George, Utah, on Thursday. Miller led the team with 12 points and Julian Alvarado and Schulz each added eight points.Carson, 3-2 on the season, plays North Valleys at 9 a.m. today.JV GIRLS BASKETBALLDOUGLAS 53, Carson 38SPARKS — Douglas topped Carson during play at the Winter Classic JV tournament on Friday. Leading Carson was Michelle Perry with 10 points. Abbey Dudley chipped in seven points. Carson plays Reno at 9 a.m. today.FRESHMEN GIRLS BASKETBALLCARSON 44, DHS 22SPARKS — Serena Miller (11) and Andrea Maffei (10) scored 21 points combined to lead Carson past Douglas at the Winter Classic tournament on Friday.Bailey Allen had six steals to go with six points. Melissa Glanzmann had nine assists. Taylor Widell had eight rebounds and six assists.
