PREP: Carson wrestlers take 2nd

SACRAMENTO — Carson High’s wrestling team finished second at Saturday’s Nighthawk Duals at Natomas High School.Carson went undefeated in pool duals, beating Lincoln 66-12, Bishop Manogue 69-12 and Woodland 61-15. The Senators then knocked off El Camino 33-29 in the semis before falling to Liberty-Brentwood 38-35 in the championship.Carson is now 6-2 in dual meets this year. The tourney gives the Senators some momentum heading into next weekend’s Reno Tournament of Champions at the Reno Events Center.“We wrestled really well overall,” coach Tim McCarthy said. “It was just what we needed. Everybody got a lot of matches.“The TOC will be our first bracketed tournament. It will be a tough one to start with. I think we have a few kids that will make it to the second day or even place.”Brady Rivera (182), Jordan Luhrs (170), Kyle Sharp (120) and Cole McCarthy (132) all went undefeated. Rivera, Sharp and Luhrs all went 5-0, while McCarthy was 3-0. Brady O’Keefe (145), Sammy Mercado (113), Levi Carter (220) and Jordan Woodward (heavyweight) all went 4-1.DAYTON WRESTLERS GO 2-4FALLON — The Dayton High wrestling team was 2-4 in its pool at the Fallon Duals Tournament this weekend.Andrew Goodman (145) was 3-3; Tyler Brown (152) was 2-4; Juan Haralson (170) was 1-5; and Joey Moore (220) was 4-2. Danny Alcantara (182) had his first official pin of the season and was 3-5.JV WRESTLINGESTRADA WINS TITLERENO — Carson’s Anthony Estrada won the 126-pound weight class at the McQueen JV Tournament on Saturday.Matt McCarthy (132), Alex Cunningham (145) and Brent Lauderbaugh (160) finished second in their respective weight classes.Austin Rudy was third at 152, while Skylar Schilling was third at 160. Victor Freeman was fourth at 160, Alex Honeycutt was fourth at 145 and Jesse Medina took fourth at 220.VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALLDAYTON 6th at classicDAYTON — A second half full-court press led the Dust Devils to a win during the final game of round-robin play Saturday morning at the Sutro Classic.The Dust Devils defeated Tonopah, 54-43, setting up a game for fifth-place against the Douglas JV team. The Tigers won 64-50.After three games in three days, Dayton coach Jason Santos played his younger players against Douglas. Davis Winebarger led the team with 15 points. Steve Thompson added nine points.Against Tonopah, Jayson Fraser led the way with 16 points. Jake Turner scored 11 points and Austin Fletcher added seven.Dayton, 1-3, travels to Spring Creek and Elko next weekend.ELKO 65, DOUGLAS 56ELKO — The Douglas boys basketball team ran into an upstart Elko squad Saturday night at the Red Lion Games in Elko and came away on the short end of a 65-56 contest.The Indians grabbed their second win over a Northern Division I squad in three nights after beating Spanish Springs on Thursday. It was Douglas’ first loss of the young season after three straight wins.“They do a good job and we were playing at their place which is just a very unique environment,” said Douglas coach Cory Thacker, who played for Elko in his high school days. “The tradition there and just the atmosphere is pretty awesome.“It was a good place to play in terms of getting our kids some experience in a playoff type of atmosphere. You have to compliment what Elko did, but we didn’t help ourselves out either. We had some turnovers that shouldn’t have been there and didn’t have great decision making. Our lack of experience showed, but that is what the preseason is for.”Douglas’ Hunter Myers led the Tigers for the third consecutive game, scoring 17 points. Austin Evans scored 15 points and had a pair of 3-pointers. James Herrick had seven and Pat Johnson added six.GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALLLOVELOCK 57, CARSON 38SPARKS — Sarita Jo Condie scored 23 points, including eight in the final quarter, as Lovelock knocked off Carson at the Winter Classic at Spanish Springs.Carson fell to 2-3 overall, and won’t play until Dec. 18 when it travels to Reno to face McQueen.Lovelock bolted to a 14-5 lead, and that put the Senators into an early hole which they were unable to dig out of. Coach Nathan Tolbert said fatigue was an issue, especially in the fourth quarter when Lovelock pulled away.“That (fatigue) was a big factor,” Tolbert said. “We got very close in the fourth quarter. We got it to six, but we didn’t have enough legs at the end.”Carson did a good job on Condie in the first half, but the Senators had nobody that matched up well, and Condie exploited that in the final two quarters.“We got a lot of good looks, but couldn’t knock enough shots down,” Tolbert said. “We didn’t get too many second chances. They are in mid-season form, and we’re still struggling. That was the big difference between the teams.”Savannah Smith led Carson with 10 points and Elena Thurman added nine.FRESHMAN GIRLS BASKETBALLCARSON 46, RENO 23RENO — Carson finished the Freshman Winter Classic unbeaten after knocking off Reno on Saturday.No other information was provided.JV BOYS BASKETBALLN. Cody Azevedo chipped in 11.JV GIRLS BASKETBALLRENO 47, CARSON 38RENO — Reno outscored Carson 15-6 in the fourth quarter to snap a 38-all tie and win by nine at the JV Winter Classic.Ivy Pembrook led Carson with 14 points, while Lindy Lehman added six points and Michelle Perry five.Carson was outscored at the free throw line, 17-3, which was the difference in the game. Carson is 3-3.
