Carson Middle School wins two Tah-Neva titles

It was a big weekend for the Carson Middle School boys basketball teams, as both the seventh and eighth-graders walked away with Tah-Neva championships.

Both teams finished their respective seasons with 18-0 records.

The eighth graders knocked off Pau Wa Lu 57-41 in the finals thanks to 20 points from Jace Keema and 12 each by Greg Wallace and Tez Allen. Earler in the tournament, Carson beat Carson Valley, 41-24, and Sage Ridge, 62-31. Wallace and Jayden DeJoseph led Carson with eight points apiece against Carson Valley. In the Sage Ridge win, Greg Wallace and Brandon Gagnon led the way with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Robert Martinez and Taylor Saarem contributed nine each.

"This eighth grade group was a pleasure to work with," coach Doug Whisler said. "They are characterized by their hard work and unselfish play. These kids are one of the more experienced groups we've had here. They play a lot of basketball, and as successful they have been on the court, they more successful in the classroom."

The seventh graders played dominant defense in chalking up three easy wins.

Carson pounded Carson Valley 42-28 in the finals thanks to 14 points by Wyatt Rooker, nine by Jerry Thomas and eight by Abel Carter. In the semis, Carson topped Sage Ridge, 49-22. Carter led the way with 15 and Kyle Glanzmann added 11. Rooker scored 12,. Carter added 11 and Thomas contributed nine in the openng round 45-30 win over Whitell.

Hoop Shoot in

Douglas County

The Tahoe/Douglas Elks Lodge is sponsoring its annual Elks "Hoop Shoot" National Basketball Free Throw Contest on Jan. at CC Meneley Elementary School at 3:30 p.m.

The contest is open to all boys and girls age 8-13, living in Douglas County.

Each contestant will have 25 free throw shots at the hoop. Children must wear tennis shoes and use provided basketballs. No registration is required for the local contest.

Local winners will compete in the district finals in Carson City on Jan. 26 with the state finals taking place in Hawthorne on Feb. 2.

Silver State gymnasts

fare well in Reno

Carson City's Silver State Gymnastics Academy's girls team competed at the High Sierra Eye Opener in Reno over the weekend.

At Level 4, in the 6-7 division, Elle Liebendorfer took top honors by placing first on vault, bars, floor, and third on beam to edge out her teammate for the first place all-around medal (AA). Emily Lewis was right on her heels with a first on beam, second on vault and bars, and a third on floor to earn her the second-place AA medal. In the 8-year-old division, Rosalia Daulerio finished second on bars and floor to capture the second-place AA. In the 9-year-old division, Hailey Glynn placed second on vault and floor, and third on bars to win the second-place AA medal. Alycia Hellwinkel was first on vault and beam placing her third in the AA. Madison Adams third place on bars helped clinch the first place team award at Level 4 for Silver State.

At Level 5, Isabella Daulerio and her teammates dominated the 11-year-old division. She won first place on all four events as well as the AA. Sophia Taggart placed third on vault, and second on everything else, including the AA. Brianna Wiles did her part by placing third on bars, beam, and floor. Their scores, along with their teammate Brenna Mitchell, earned them the third-place team award.

Lily Reid was the lone level six for the team in the 11-and-up division. After finishing a disappointing second place AA in her last meet, she went about redeeming herself by finishing first place on all four events to claim the first-place AA award.

At level 3, in the 5-6 division, Annika Bruketta placed second on floor, and Sara Mitchell won first on vault. In the 7-year-old division, Riley Glynn won third place on bars while Josie McIntosh took home the third place vault to round out a very successful meet.
