Weatherman: Carson's snow and slushiness easing up today

Slushy conditions with snow Saturday melting quickly or turning to rain proved tricky for some motorists, but that problem should abate slowly as the weekend progresses. Such was the word from various weather reporting sources, including Mark Faucette of the National Weather Service in Reno.Saturday afternoon, Faucette said a winter storm warning in effect until 1 a.m. Sunday was being revised to reflect such a storm warning until only 10 p.m. Saturday.“It won't continue much into the evening,” Faucette said. “We're seeing most of this thin out.” He said the weather service wasn't anticipating any winter storm warning necessity to reassert itself today.“But it's a tricky situation,” he added, speaking of driving conditions during the afternoon Saturday. “It's hazardous.”And he projected possible trickiness going forward, depending on how the precipitation and the temperature interact through the night and today. “You could get a period of snow turning to rain on the valley floor.”At mid-afternoon Saturday, Nevada State Trooper Dan Gordon said nothing serious was going on in the Carson-Tahoe-Minden District.But he said there was a white out in southern Washoe County between the state capital and Reno. He said such conditions can crop up with wintry weather. “It just makes it tough to commute,” he noted.But there isn't strong commuting pressure on weekends and, given the weather report, wintry bluster may clear some today.Today's forecast calls for snow in the morning, snow and rain in the afternoon, but the snow level should rise to 5,500 feet and stay above the valley floors.Snow accumulation should be about an inch, but up to three inches above 5,500 feet, according to the forecast. Highs today are anticipated to be in the low 40s, tonight in the 20s. One weather source indicated the 100 percent chance of precipitation on Saturday was dwindling to 70 percent today and 20 percent Monday.
