Christmas Tide. Christmas was heartily observed in Carson, despite the hard times. Observances were not forgotten and gifts distributed on all sides with a lavish hand. The churches celebrated with special services. The secular portion of the community spent the day in the usual fashion, abstaining from work and eating and drinking liberally. The weather was like summer and enjoyed by all classes.

100 years ago

Yesterday an Indian known as "Jennie Mack" fell dead from heart disease at the depot where she was watching other Indians play cards. She was being provided for by P.J. McMahon, and only left the house yesterday. She was given a Christian burial this afternoon.

70 years ago

"Merry Christmas." The annual greeting of full sincerity finds the people of the United States this Christmas time putting forth their utmost efforts in carrying on the whole-heartedly an important part in the greatest war in the world's history. We are lovers of peace, but for lasting and enduring peace for millions of persons yet unborn.

50 years ago

One of Santa Claus' best helpers is Mrs. Bernice Schneider of 611 W. Robinson St. She is the chair of a local clearing house for the needy during the Christmas holiday which donated food, clothing and toys to 38 families with 141 children. The local police reserve supported the drive.

The Nevada Appeal publishes a morning paper Christmas Day to allow employees to spend time with family.

Sally Mooney remembers when out on the ranch all toys came from Sears and Roebuck and Montgomery Ward Christmas catalogs. She says it was a miracle that Santa found her and her brother on that isolated cattle ranch in Nevada. In 1944, he actually came twice, she remembered.
