(Continued) The remaining cars, mail, baggage, smoking, passenger and sleeping did not jump the track. Where the accident happened was at a bank of snow, directly at the crossing. Engineer Tom Clarke had opened the throttle to 40 miles per hour to cut through the snow, but the engine struck a plank at the crossing, causing the accident. Numerous persons were injured and two Indians killed that were riding on the engine.

100 YEARS AGO

New laws have taken effect from the last legislative session. Five time losers get life terms. People attempting suicide are to be charged with attempted homicide facing fines and imprisonment. It is now unlawful to sell horse meat as beef. It is unlawful to sell adulterated or doctored milk. Chicken fighting is now banned. Farmers will be punished if they allow water to run alongside roads, injuring the roads.

70 YEARS AGO

A U.S. Army pilot vainly tried to find a place to land his plane at Lake Tahoe yesterday and instead crashed into Marla Bay. Before crashing into the lake, the plane clipped a tree close to the shore of the lake at the extreme west end of Zephyr Point.

50 YEARS AGO

Investigators are searching for a flaming object that landed in Central Nevada. Authorities say it was not an airplane and landed some 12 miles north of Austin.

20 YEARS AGO

Two-thirds of drivers on monitored Nevada highways are exceeding the 55-mile-per-hour speed limit according to the Transportation Department.

10 YEARS AGO

The Millennium Membership Quilt is now complete thanks to the volunteer effort of the Carson Valley Historical Society and Carson Valley Quilt Guild.
