(AP) - Nevada's U.S. House members have introduced legislation that would convey 10,000 acres of federally owned land to the city of Yerington in Lyon County for development.
The Yerington Land Conveyance and Sustainable Development Act is co-sponsored by Republican Reps. Mark Amodei and Joe Heck and Democrat Shelley Berkley.
The acreage is near Pumpkin Hollow, a copper mine being developed by Nevada Copper.
Local officials say taking ownership of Bureau of Land Management property that surrounds the project will allow them to tap into infrastructure improvements made by the mining company.
It will also help to spur development in a county with high unemployment.
The Yerington lands bill was introduced in the House on Wednesday.
