130 YEARS AGO
Mike Cullen, convicted of selling whisky to the Indians, was allowed to go upon his own recognizance until sentencing day. When he appeared with an officer, Judge Cary sentenced him to 10 days. There being no officer to take him in at that moment, his Honor trusted Cullen to present himself and he was locked up. In the reporter's memory he can only remember once before when this happened in Nevada County.
100 YEARS AGO
The automobile owned to George Pringle of Yerington was destroyed by fire a few evenings ago. While the machine was stuck in a mudhole, a passenger struck a match to see what the trouble was, igniting a leaky gasoline tank sending the car into a mass of tangled iron.
70 YEARS AGO
The Navy department reports 1,009 naval, marine and enlisted men and 1,200 civilians were taken by the Japanese as prisoners of war on Dec. 7. The civilians were on Wake and Guam, constructing defenses. Civilians William R. Manson, engineer from Silver City; Carl Friberg of Fallon; and Kenneth D. Hall of Carson City were from western Nevada.
50 YEARS AGO
Seven homesteaders in a tract in Ormsby county southeast of here are angry because residents and the county engineer have named the streets after their children and relatives. The complainants met over the weekend to protest the names of Kathy, Ricky, Laura and Sammy in what is called the River Tract.
