The awards keep coming. Carson High School not only offers a wide variety of academics and activities, but also has so much success in those areas.
I continue to feel blessed to work with interesting, intellectual, award- winning professionals and students. Carson High School is one of the top schools in Nevada for many reasons. Following are a few more of those specific reasons why.
ROTC RIFLE TEAM PLACES AT NATIONALS
The CHS ROTC Rifle Team competed on Feb. 6 at the state competition, placing second. The team lost the top spot by six points.
The ROTC rifle team qualified for the Navy National Match held at Camp Perry in Ohio last week. Members of the national qualifying team were Rhett Petrenko, Jamie Robles, Makayla Ragnone and Mikal Johnson. The team placed eighth nationally.
Makayla Ragnone placed 10th overall in the nation and Rhett Patrenko placed 21st. Congrats to the CHS ROTC Rifle team for a superb performance!
CHS WINS FITNESS RECOGNITION
Jennifer Minifie, physical education teacher, accepted the Certificate of Recognition for Carson High School from the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports on Feb. 21.
CHS was selected as a Physical Activity and Fitness Demonstration Center based on the quality of our physical education program and our willingness to serve as a model for other schools in our state and throughout the nation.
CHS is the only Physical Activity and Fitness Demonstration Center in Northern Nevada.
BOWLING WINS
Congratulations to the CHS bowling team for its win over Bishop Manogue on Tuesday. The win puts them in first place of the Valley Division of the High Desert Interscholastic Bowling Program. The team will face Reed in the state championship on Wednesday at the Grand Sierra Resort.
Best of luck to this great group of bowlers.
VOLLEYBALL/KEY CLUB FUNDRAISER
The volleyball team is partnering up with Key Club to do a dining to donate fundraiser at Applebee's on Wednesday.
Bring a flier with you, head to Applebee's and support a couple of great CHS groups. For a flier or more information, email coach Erin Been at ebeen@carson.k12.nv.us.

SKI TEAM FINISHES SEASON
(This update is written by CHS students Jessica Roberts & Karenza Strode)
The ski season for the CHS Ski Team has officially ended.
This season was unique for the team because of the lack of snow in the beginning; yet, the team still was able to have a great time and train at Kirkwood. We thank Kirkwood for this.
There was a great turnout of skiers this year with 29 members. One of our newest members Caleb Schadeck won the most Courageous Award at zone championships because he never gave up and continued skiing during the hardest times.
Manon Hustinex, a foreign exchange student from Belgium, placed second overall at zone held at Heavenly Resort. The following people made it to the eighth round of zone: Taylor Laird, Mary Novak, Jessica Roberts and Charles Heresy. The CHS ski team is coached by Adrienne Schneider and assistant coached by Chris Carter.
HOSA FUNDRAISER
Carson HOSA will be having a paper shredding fundraiser noon-3 p.m. Friday the north parking lot at Carson High. One file box shreds for $5. Any documents are accepted, electronic hard drives/flash drives also accepted for an addition fee.
All shredding will be done by Offsite Data Depot. All funds raised will go to transportation costs to Nevada State Leadership Conference.
SENIOR SPOTLIGHT
This week's Senior Spotlight is Henry Huffman. Huffman has a grade-point average of 4.0 . He is planning on attending UNR and double majoring in computer science and engineering.
He plans to go to the University of California, San Francisco to complete his doctorate. Henry was a Link Crew member as a junior and really enjoyed connecting with the freshmen and making new friends. He has been very creative with his senior project and has built a half-pipe skateboarding ramp.
He also mentors kids in his neighborhood, teaching them safety when riding skateboards.
Henry works part time at Keva Juice and also tutors younger students. We are very pleased to have Henry as a Carson High student and wish him well after graduation.
STAFF FACT
Answer to last week's fact is Jeff Rispin. To put himself through school, Jeff worked as a dealer at numerous casinos, but prior to that played semi, semi pro baseball for the Davis Red Sox in the early 1980s. Jeff teaches calculus and algebra II at CHS.
New fact: This person graduated from Oklahoma State University. One fascinating fact is that she taught the lead singer of All-American Rejects, Tyson Ritter in Stillwater, Okla.
• Angila Golik is a government and sociology teacher at CHS and is a member of Senator Pride.
